Couple quits smoking for health of parrot

LONDON (Reuters) - A couple booked themselves into a clinic to quit smoking after the vet said it was the only way to save their beloved sick parrot.

Kevin Barclay and Sharon Wood gave up a 50-cigarette-a-day habit to save their Amazon orange-winged parrot J.J., said the vet, Glen Cousquer of the South Beech Veterinary Surgery in Essex.

"One of the key things that we need to get right with parrots generally is air quality," he told Reuters on Wednesday.

"This particular bird presented with very severe respiratory problems. The owners were instructed to do everything they could to improve the bird's environment."

"I think I must have shaken the owners up quite badly, because the next time I saw them they actually had booked themselves into one of these anti-smoking clinics and were determined to stop. They've gone five weeks," he said.

J.J., he said, "is doing really well. It is certainly going to improve his life expectancy."

It may help the owners, too.

Trident gum has 'dentec' - you're supposed to chew two pieces after every meal and it's supposed to be better for your teeth than not doing it.

If you'd like to hear more of the 15,023 advertising 'facts' I've learned from reading labels since quitting smoking feel free to ask Wink

My wife, Mrs. edgarblythe, has been smoke-free for about a week. She is holding up remarkably well. Of course, she had a chest infection of some kind and when she went to the doc he told her "Quit right now." Fright is one of the best methods to break an unhealthy habit. No patches required, just a desire to be well.

Sheesch! Edgar, can't I be out of A2K for a while without your Mrs. getting sick?

Getting rid of the demon cigs should help both of you.

Wish her well for me.

OB
OB, I'm so relieved you are still behaving yourself. I was so worried while I was away from A2K that you would lose your stubborness, but I see you are still the old sweet rascal that we love.

OB lose his stubborness? No way. not possible . The only thing more stubborn is a jackass.. and I dont see 4 legs on him. HAHAH

Im still here, still going, though it isnt a hard fight , just a time that I really dont want to feel things. I really looked into why I wanted the cigs in the first place and I realized that what I was really looking for was a mute button for my anger and my embarassment. Since I dont do street drugs and i am not a big fan of booze.. smoking just seemed like a logical conclusion. It worked for the moment. It made me think about something else, calmed my nerves and slowed down my reality for about 2 hours.
I am glad that I dont still think I need a mute button or I would be in front of this computer for hours trying not to light up again. So.. I guess horray for me.. how ever many days it has been. :-)

I am glad to hear other people jumping on this bandwagon. ( Though it is getting pretty full! ) hheeehehe.
I wish your wife all the best Edgar. And you too. I am sure it is hard to have a doc tell your wife that she has to do something right away or it will be life altering. Between the two of you, you should make it out just fine and hopefully her withdrawl wont drive ya nuts! ;-) Best of luck and health to you both! I would offer chocolate stars... but I am in line for mine... and I am pretty greedy! hehee

Mrs. eb has only complained once, on the 4th day. She wanted a cig so bad she thought about having one a day to taper off. I didn't say yea or nay for fear of appearing a control freak. She got through the day and I don't think she has smoked. Her infection is long gone. It will be worth that bit of sickness to get her off the tobacco. I myself have been smoke free for about ten or eleven years. I know what people go through to quit.
