HOUSTON (AP) — Evidence from more than 6,600 rape kits that went untested for years in Houston have turned up 850 hits in the FBI's nationwide database of DNA profiles, marking a major step in the city's $6 million effort to address the backlog, officials announced Monday.

Charges have been filed against 29 people, six of whom have been convicted, since the city launched an effort in 2013 to test 6,663 rape kits — some of which dated back nearly three decades. Testing was completed in the fall, and the results have now been uploaded to a database used by investigators nationwide to compare DNA profiles of possible suspects, Mayor Annise Parker said.

"This milestone is of special importance to rape survivors and their families and friends because it means their cases are receiving the attention they should have years ago," Parker said at a news conference, where she joined local law enforcement officials to announce the results.

Police are continuing to review the matches to see if charges can be filed in other cases. In the cases where prosecutors have won convictions, defendants have received sentences ranging from 2 to 45 years in prison. One case was dismissed after the victim decided not to pursue the case.

Into these 6 cases that only a couple were nailed because of the rape kit, that the rest we nailed on some other evidence.

What this is all about is pushing more money to the victim industry. At about $1.5k spent before any police or court money is spent per kit this is employing a lot of people.

They could have done the survey in some Christian neighborhood located next to a muslim neighborhood in Sweden or Norway. Numbers might have been 9 out of 3 (everybody gets raped thrice) or something like that....

Rape kits can also be the evidence that clears a person of criminal charges. As far as the Texas stats re the results, the poster said 6 convictions and also 29 arrests. An arrest doesn't mean a trial has been held, it's simply the first step before a trial can be completed.

When I was a very young women, an even younger woman I knew from high school was murdered. Three years ago, her father made a plea on local stations for information regarding the crime. She was not sexually assaulted, or if she was, that detail was not made public. She was beaten to death in her own home and according to the reports she must have put up a fierce fight. Her case is still cold, but the police claim the material under her broken fingernails is still being held in evidence. So now, after 40 years, with no one charged with her murder, would it be a waste of my taxpayer money for the County to pay to have the evidence examined? Is murder a big enough deal to coax the county to pay to
process a crime scene. Or is it kind of like rape, she's been dead 2o years longer than she actually lived, so....why bother.

The desire to see bad people flogged and ruined must be balanced by an attempt to stay a free people. This database that the government is building fast is a threat to everything that we once held dear about America. And no one cares.
