1 in 5 women get raped?

Patrick Witt, the former Yale quarterback at the center of a highly covered 2012 sexual assault scandal, is back in print. Witt wrote an op-ed for the Boston Globe on Monday deploring Harvard’s new sexual harassment policy, which resembles Yale’s in its “informal complaint” option: At both schools, students can file unofficial, secret accusations with a group of university staff. At Yale, this triggers a procedure that entails (per Yale’s website) “limited or no investigation” and results in measures like “a warning conversation with the respondent, a no-contact agreement, a recommendation for counseling, a change in housing, etc.”

Three years ago, Witt became a press darling when he announced his decision to miss his Rhodes Scholarship interview in order to lead the Yale Bulldogs against Harvard at the annual Harvard-Yale football game, which took place on Nov. 19. Months later, the New York Times published a story revealing that someone had filed an informal sexual harassment complaint against Witt in September, and that news of the allegations had leaked to the Rhodes Trust, which suspended Witt’s candidacy pending another letter of endorsement from Yale (one they may or may not have been willing to write). The Times reporter and many others—hi—concluded that Witt had actually turned down the interview because he knew his chances of gaining the Rhodes had significantly dimmed due to the complaint. At the time, I wrote that perhaps playing in The Game was Witt’s way of re-establishing control over his story, of reframing a potential disgrace as a heroic sacrifice. (Other reporters were also unimpressed by the QB’s membership in a notoriously misogynistic frat house and by his two arrests, one for entering a co-ed dorm drunk after hours, going upstairs without an escort, and shoving a student guard who tried to kick him out.)

After the lash came the backlash, which rightly pointed out that Witt was innocent until proven guilty. (And because of Yale’s informal complaint system, he wasn’t going to be proven anything.)

Despite all the inconsistencies in Witt’s story, he’s right. He is right that “by giving to unsubstantiated accusations the confoundingly difficult-to-define title of ‘informal complaint,’ ” Yale plunged him under a cloud of suspicion he couldn’t dispel. He is right that “denying accused students an opportunity to clear their names” is unjust, “detached from the most basic elements of fairness and due process.” Everything Witt says about the power of these sub rosa systems to humiliate and handicap possibly innocent young men is correct—and perhaps that’s why 28 Harvard Law professors have inscribed their own objections to the new policy into the public record.
Actually, Witt’s fishy article makes his point far better than he knows. In addition to abusing students who can’t count on an investigation to shake the ignominy from their names, these sexual assault policies deny everyone the certainty that would preclude a piece like this from being written.

She should not have been prosecuted considering she was mentally ill.

If a man with documented or diagnosed mental problems is charged with rape, I would hope they take that into consideration and treat the person for it while in prison.

I will point one thing out, though, to Bill and others: IF it is indeed the case the 1 in 5 women gets raped, it does NOT follow from that that 1 in 5 men must be a rapist. If you have a co-ed frat house full of 20 men and 20 women, and if one guy date-rapes 4 women, then you'll have a situation where 1 in 5 women has been raped, but where only 1 in 20 men is a rapist.

Convicted Del Mar rapist Sean Patrick Banks sentenced

EL CAJON, Calif. - A former Del Mar man convicted of raping two women, including one he met on the Christian dating website ChristianMingle.com., has been sentenced to 37 years to life in prison.

Sean Patrick Banks, 39, was convicted in June of raping a La Mesa woman in her apartment after they met on ChristianMingle.com in November 2012 and raping another woman he met on Match.com in 2009.

Prior to the sentencing, Banks said if the victim would take a polygraph test -- and pass it -- his attorney would not file an appeal.

The judge admonished Banks, calling him "arrogant."

One of the victims, a woman named "KK," spoke to the court and addressed Banks.

"I want Sean and his family to know that I pray for him every day. I pray that he realizes what he did was wrong. I pray that he understands how terrible this has been for me, and I pray that he realizes that he is not smarter than the law and he can't just hurt people and get away with it with no punishment," she said.

After the verdict, Deputy District Attorney David Williams III called Banks a "very dangerous Internet predator" who talked about Jesus and the Bible with the woman he met through ChristianMingle.com before going to her apartment.

The woman Banks met on Match.com said he forced her to have sex after they had dinner and drinks at a La Jolla restaurant.

Defense attorney Brian J. White said the case involved "consent given" and "consent withdrawn," telling the jury that when the victims told Banks to stop his sexual advances, he did.

Banks' attorney said he would appeal the case based on evidence that was not presented during the trial.

Sorry if grown women can lied about how they had gotten pregnant I see no reason to assume that a 13 years old would not do so also.

That is probably one of the most repulsive things you've said. A 13 year old girl is just a child, barely into puberty. And I can see no reason why she would lie about who raped her.

"children, barely into puberty" can look much older as I know because I have seen some that I would peg for 17/18, and they sometimes make sexual choices as if they are full grown women.

I recently posted two recent news stories in this thread, one about the rape of a 91 year old, and the other about the rape of a 100 year old woman, both in their own homes. There seems to be no age limit, either too young, or too old, when a female is free from the danger of being raped.

Except they are not "full grown women", a 13 year old is a child, which is why they cannot legally consent.

someday you are going to tell us I hope why you are on this hobby horse of old women being raped. It is a very rare event, in a discussion of sexual assault it warrants no more than a passing mention.

Now FF thinks somehow correcting you on your **** up somehow gives her moral grounds.

Whenever someone makes light of the suffering of an entire group of people, that is bigotry. Period. You can't backpedal from this firefly; you are a bigot. Your bigotry is out in the open in the form of these quotes for everyone to see. You can't hide from it. I do believe in freedom of speech. I'm not trying to suppress theirs. I'm simply using my freedom of speech to point out obvious bigotry.

But let's play devil's advocate for a moment. If you see nothing wrong with making light of an entire group's suffering, and you believe that others shouldn't be allowed to use their freedom of speech to criticise that bigotry, then you are by default saying that's Ok for people to walk around wearing t-shirts that say:

What you're also doing is removing your own right to criticise people like hawkeye and Bill when they disagree with you in regards to rape issues. Because remember, the person who says something that others disagree with (according to you) is merely expressing their freedom of speech and should not be criticised back (according to you), because they could just be being "ironic".

ANYONE who claims that they are an "Ironic Misandrist" is no different than someone who claims that they're an "Ironic Racist". It's a copout designed to allow that person the say and do horrible things, and if anyone calls them out on it they can shrug their shoulders and claim that it's all in good fun.
