I recently came across an old notebook which belonged to a great uncle who served in the Great War. Here's a poem he wrote:

@hightor,
I recently learned that the "macanochi" on the third page refers to the maconochie ration, which was a highly preferred ration of tinned meat and vegetable stew; highly prized among troops when served even half-way hot, as it had lots of fats to provide flavor and calories. It was very unappetizing cold, as the fat and grease would congeal at the top.
