I think the whole of conventional mathematics is inconvenient, awkard and what have you.
Far more superior is the "Galactic mathematics' or "Vedic mathematicas".
For a lot of people it seems like a bag of tricks. However, when one starts working within this system it feels creative , elegant and very very efficient.
You can do math from simple aritmatic to Calculus and 'difficult' differential equations etc

starting with aritthmetic.

What is:

75 x 75=?
38 x 32=?
13 x 11=?
2312/9=?

Try to do this and then I wil show the Vedic or Galactic Mtah method.

@bobsal u1553115,
me too , when I started I was flabbergasted with only the aritmathic but now I know one can do calculus etc with it. and it is really a buieatifull system.

and, well, can you do the sums the Vedic way?

I am surprised you cannot do these sums yourself. May I suggest this website to you: http://www.jainmathemagics.com/page/5/ I'm sure you'll be as facile in this system as I am in no time! Good luck, my friend!

@Quehoniaomath,
I'll bite

75*75=(70+5)(70+5)=70*70+2*70*5+5*5=4900+700+25=5625

38*32=(30+8)(30+2)=30*30+(8+2)*30+8*2=900+300+16=1216

13*11=130+11=141

2312/9=2304/9+8/9=256+8/9

@raprap,
ok thanks.

You bite????

Anyway, with "Galactic" or "Vedic Mathematics" it can be done much quicker.

@Quehoniaomath,
You can also use Egyptian Arithmetic methods that is being proposed in some of the Common Core education and the Babylonians used base 60 which provides many more divisible bases than the decades used by the arabic base system. Then there's the Mayan system of base 20.

As for your Galatic or Vedic Mathematics--elucidate or die.

Don't let me start on common core! It is idiotic!!!

some experiences people have with Vedic math:

Quote:
"I love using bar numbers and the multiplication techniques, especially with some of my classes. They are really taking to the approaches which underpin VM. A particular group enjoyed multiplying by 11, and then because of the flexible nature of this method, they asked if it was possible for other times tables. We spent the next part of the lesson devising a strategy for multiplying by 12, 13 etc. And yes, I've had a few children saying to me, "Why weren't we taught this way at the start?" and "This method is so much easier!" Pupils who would normally not want to volunteer are putting their hands up to answer questions so quickly that it's hard not to look surprised!"

"I am teaching VM methods to my child now. He is very excited when I taught him the 2-digit multiplication and multiplication with 11. These days he is following only VM to do multiplications and he feels as if he is a magician. At school he surprised his friends by doing them with VM. I feel children adapt more easily to VM than adults."

"I only had heard about Vedic Maths. I knew it was fast and easy. But it is entirely different since I experience it. It's much easier, simpler, faster, more interesting, more exciting, and full of fun. I feel overwhelmed by the power of this Vedic Math- not known or heard before. I feel the more I delve into it, more treasure I am getting from it. I just don't want to come out of this most exciting, funfilled moments of my life. I told my brother, nephew, my son, and my family about this, and I said this Math is so much fun I never imagined before. I am simply excited about it, and want to keep doing it forever. I really want to share this magical maths with lot of people, and change their approach towards it. I want to help lot of students master some of the most difficult topics of Math using Vedic Math. I am totally excited about learning this new Math."

"Introduced my students of 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade to subtraction using all from 9 and the last from 10 for subtracting numbers near a base. They just loved the method. During the maths lab activity I had combined all the students together. And using this method the 1st grade students could compete with 2nd and 3rd grade students with the speed which I had not imagined. When I started learning VM 5 years back, there was a misconception that VM is only for high school students. But this training has proved it wrong. I can introduce even 1st grade students to VM and the results are amazing. They have started loving maths."

(Sorry for my lateness on this)
Ok, Thanks! Now we will start with:

75 x 75=?

In Vedic math, we use 16 basic Sutras or 'Word Formula' to solve mathematical problems.

In this case we use the sutra;

Quote:
By One More Than The Previous Digit

wel, we ha 75 x 75, so the Previous Digit is of course 7.
we add then 1 to 7 (One More) and multiply them (By) , 7x8=56.
We now, because of the 5 at the end the end will be 25,
so

75 x 75=(7x8)/25 7x8=5625

This takes a few second yo do in your head.

or do you prefer:

Quote:
75*75=(70+5)(70+5)=70*70+2*70*5+5*5=4900+700+25=5625

13*11=130+11=141

2312/9=2304/9+8/9=256+8/9

Rap

Ok, now we will carry on with

38 x 32=?

38*32=(30+8)(30+2)=30*30+(8+2)*30+8*2=900+300+16=1216

the one mentioned above "75 x 75" is a special case of this one in which (2+8)=10. The sum of the digits on the right is ten.

we use here the same sutra:

Quote:
By One More Than The Previous Digit

and we proceed as follows:

38 x 32=

we see the 3 add one this makes 4 and multiply, 3 x4 =12 , then we multiply the 2 and the 8 :

Quote:
38 x 32=(3 x4) /(8x2)=12/16=1216

Voila!

Or do you prefer:

Quote:
38*32=(30+8)(30+2)=30*30+(8+2)*30+8*2=900+300+16=1216

?

Ok , we go on with:

13*11=

13 x 11=130+11=141, yes this is an easy one but it can be done even easier.
And, as you can see, this one is wrong. with VM you make very litte mistakes because you use less line.

Here we use the sutra:Digital Compression, or Digital Sums.

we look at the 13 and the split them into 1 and 3.

We make a gap between them and then add 1+=3=4 and put 4 in the middle!~

13 x 11=

1+3=4

13 x 11= 143.

Voila!

Or do you prefer:

13*11=130+11=141
