Vanishing German?
The High School in my old hometown of Meriden provided optional instruction for students to learn German, French and Latin during the fifties. Of course the assumption in those days was that everyone in the town knew how to speak English which today of course is no longer a safe assumption. Some people can neither write nor speak English when they graduate from High School today. Not just in my old hometown but everywhere.

But anyway, yesterday in the hometown paper I read that German was no longer going to be offered in high school. It used to be offered beginning in the 9th grade. Why should this bother Marley? Well because a good number of my friends there were children of German immigrants. Now they have children. Many Germans in the town back in the forties, fifties and earlier. To this day one of the grammar schools there was originally known as "The German School" as most of its students were German.

One woman whose name I recognized offering opposition to the idea of cancelling the German courses emphasized that she wished to have children of German heritage still living in Meriden continue to have the option for formally studying German. I agree. But it is a losing and impractical argument unfortunately. There is currently one full time teacher of German. A second one resigned because benefits were cut. Another part time teacher quit. This business is directly related to budget cuts as might be expected.

There are just twelve(12) students remaining in the German class. All seniors. When they graduate that is the end of High School German in my old home town.

In this day and age I do not believe that any European language is as valuable, as important to know as German; for reasons of Economics or politics. They can fiddle with the European commonality of those countries over there but Germany is the center of everything. It is the economic powerhouse of Europe.

I start another stab on my own learning German in a few weeks.

mctag : if you claim scotland to be the centre of europe, i'll lay claim for hamburg to be the navel of europe ! (much more sexy, i think - particularly now since showing the 'bellybutton' is so in vogue !). hbg

i'll let walter have 'the heart', i find the (exposed) navel so much more interesting. i don't know what's 'en vogue' in europe, but here in canada 'navels' are sure shown off by girls both skinny (and not so skinny ! LOL !); but the 'exhibition' won't last last long ... the first frost will bring parkas and fur-hats out. hbg

Hamburger, around here, the girls will show their bellybuttons even in the middle of winter. I say let them pay their doctor's bills! No insurance for them! :-)
