That's fine. I like the fact that it may give some people a moment longer to think about whether they really want them.

As far as I'm concerned, tobacco can be sold at tobacconists.

@Ticomaya,
There are health benefits with chocolate which is a candy. There are health benefits with alcohol.

Cigarettes are habit forming and addictive physically -- candy, soda, etc. are addictive only mentally. Many people can have one candy bar every once in a while-- very few people that smoke can have one cigaratte once in a while.

Not yet.

Dying of lung cancer is an ugly thing-- I've seen it.

As my doctor quotes to me all the time -- there are only 3 things that guarantee to extent your life: no smoking, wearing seatbeats, and flossing. Other things (like you mention no candy, junk food, etc) may extend your life but it is not guaranteed.

I've played soccer with guys that played better if they smoked a cigarette at halftime.

Course I'm sure they all have emphysema by now.

Ha ha touche.

But unlikely -- as I know only to indulge once in a while. Fortunately I actually like veggies better than chips and candy. I don't really have a sweet tooth.

And they are just as hot now as the Marboro cowboy is now...or rather the last pictures of him..

Wayne McLaren, who posed for some promotional photographs on behalf of Marlboro in 1976, succumbed to lung cancer at age 51 on 22 July 1992.

After learning he had cancer, McLaren embarked on an anti-smoking campaign that included the production of a commercial described as follows: In the powerful TV spot, images of the handsome young Wayne McLaren in a Stetson hat are juxtaposed with shots of his withered form in a hospital bed just prior to his death. His brother, Charles, provides the voiceover and chides tobacco companies for promoting an 'independent' lifestyle and asks, 'Lying there with all those tubes in you, how independent can you really be?'

@tsarstepan,
Story - I bought an umbrella a Duane Reade when I was last in NYC. When I went in, it was drizzling. When I went out the door, the umbrella sent its ribs to the sky and I got soaked. Not, of course, their fault.

Best memories were from Rite Aid in northern california. Here in Abq, I like Walgreen's, my own in particular. The system lost my photos of Katy and they broke their necks to find them, and those people always remember me when I show up and they are on the floor. Also like the pharmacy; they are busy and smart while being inundated with stuff going on. Also, they listen to me, not that I rant, but they enter the data I tell them in my 'file'.

Edit, I'm not against cigs being available. (I quit 30+ years ago). I do get the problem with apparent health oriented stores - but, in reality, they have been convenience stores at large.

Are they wanting a cookie?

Other retailers will very happily take CVS's $1.5 billion in cig sales plus other business that smokers have been steering towards CVS. Not one single fewer cigarettes will be sold.

Playing the part of the paternal prude might get some off-setting new business for CVS, but my guess is that they best not count on it. This is mostly about branding, and I predict that it will be an expensive effort, costing 2-3% of sales ($125 Billion at last count)

@chai2,
I have hated the stink of cigarettes since age 4; anywhere.

However, if the corporation will lose $2,OOO,OOO,OOO
in consequence of this decision, then I must wonder
whether management is bearing true fidelity
to its fiduciary duty to the financial well-being of its stockholders.
