Why do all Americans wear cowboy hats?

I've not been able to truly understand the pancake hat look, have tried, as I was alive and sensient around the time of teeny hats with veils.. and sort of claws to hold them on.

I still have my grandmother's hat, purple felt - she died in her eighties in 1951 (or so).
