If i had my choice, i'd take the M14 every time.
Very accurate

@OmSigDAVID,
With detachable magazine, m-14 didn't have the m-1 thumb issue.

Indeed; there was never any such thing
as an M-14 thumb.
That was the difference between being clip fed
and being magazine fed.

I attended a gun show and symposium a few months ago, and I
passed by a table with a young boy offering 2 tricked-out M-1 Garands for sale.
I commented something about M-1 thumbs, whereupon the lad
exhibited his.

@ossobuco,
I agree and understand. I get the road rage feelings. It's a strange feeling when driving and confronting another driver. Being behind the wheel gives one a strong sense of power, very real. Being in a pack of bikers is the same thing. Bad situation. I would never ride in a pack like that. I used to ride in clubs and we limited our groups to 5-6 riders, and we rarely road that close to each other. Never would intimidate drivers . Getting in an argument with a car while on a bike is stupid.

@IRFRANK,
I really never understood road rage. I always take the view that the drivers around me are either just naturally stupid, or are not bothering to pay attention. I developed an excellent "sixth sense" about their stupidity. I followed my boss to a car dealership once, to give him a ride back to the shop after he dropped off his vehicle at the end of the lease. On the way back, i was talking aloud about the other drivers, just to have something to say. I would say things like "he's going to pull ahead of us and cut in." Said driver would then do exactly that, and my boss began to look at me as though i had two heads. But it was all true. In a distance of about 15 miles, almost all of it on interstate highways, i correctly predicted the behavior of about nine or ten drivers. The best style of defensive driging is to assume all the drivers around you are stupid and irresponsible, and to take measures not to be in the wrong place when they exhibit their stupidity (which is inevitable).

I 've been behind the wheel many times.
I never got a "sense of power" neither "strong" nor otherwise; not real,
but I got where I was going. For defense from "road rage feelings"
I had a stainless steel mirror .44 revolver loaded with hollowpointed slugs.

I only needed it once.

@Setanta,
I agree. I learned predictive defensive driving riding a motorcycle. It's necessary for survival. Many drivers are reactionary only. They get into bad, avoidable situations often. I hate riding with someone else and see something coming they ignore. But I do understand the human reaction to be aggressive. It's easy to do inside a steel box. I'm not justifying it, just understanding.

@OmSigDAVID,
So that 44 isn't there to make you feel powerful? The testosterone in your posts belies that belief.

Yes; it is NOT. It is for use if necessary,
like a spare tire or like a health insurance policy.

Yeah, but this was road range fueled with mob mentality.

Off the subject, but not...

I had the driver of an SUV play cat and mouse with me over a basically deserted 30-40 mile stretch of highway once, and I don't mind telling you I was terrified. If I slowed down, pulled to the side, he did so, if I tried to speed up, he get right on my tail, if I tried to switch lanes, he wouldn't let me. If he got in front of me, he'd slow down and wouldn't let me pass. This was pre-cell phones. Him in his 18 wheel semi and me in my 1985 toyota corolla that would shimmy if I got it over 60 or 65. I finally got away from him by quickly getting off an exit that he couldn't manuver quickly enough to follow.
What was really bad was that afterwards, when I tried to tell him employee what had happened, I was blown off until I kept calling back a dozen times, even then it was "what do want us to do?"

Watching that video brought a lot of those feelings back. I wasn't there, and don't think I'd ever know the whole story, but I would think the people in the SUV were more frightened than the cyclists....and frightened people can make poor decisions. In this case I don't know what the right decision would have been....kids in the car and everything.....sheesh.

Did you ever see that movie, Chai, with Dennis Weaver where, I think what happened, he made a traffic no no and he pissed off a semi driver and it became a duel to the death.

Maybe a late 60s early 70s movie.

@chai2,
I was in a similar situation once--and i used the same escape hatch. I saw an exit coming up, so i sped up, the clown sped up to get in front of me, and i took the exit without signalling--end of problem. There's really nothing you can do about road rage idiots--i was just saying that i never felt road rage on my part.

@Setanta,
I try not to either.

Most of the time I have no problem, I'm like "whatever".

Once in a while, if I get that tingle, I try to say to myself, "It doesn't mean anything in the big picture, back off let the other person go on, just think about something else."

@chai2,
I have to deal with my husband - he gets all worked up when driving and calling people idiots and stuff. I will try to say something like maybe the person isn't familar with the area and stuff like that and also remind him - is it worth it to get in a fight - what if the guy has a gun? And stuff like that.

I think I'm more like you - it can bother me at times when someone acts so much like an idiot driving - but then I think what does it matter? Sometimes I will just wave at them with a smile instead of getting riled up sort of like go ahead you obviously need to get where your going more quickly than me.

@Linkat,
You know what linkat, (and this is starting to get off the subject of the thread) Maybe some road rage comes from the fact that you've spent all day at work having to not say what is on your mind when somethings bugging you, and when you get behind the wheel, you feel you're on you're own time.

I gotta go find your cubicle thread, I got something to share.
Not like I'm experiencing rage over it, but I now see your point about some people in prairie dog land.
