Personally, I had thought it obvious that Europe (in general, not including England and a few other parts) was much more family centric than the US.

I never misread.
One is developed by the culture they are accustomed to.
If that culture is pretentious, so too are they.
The closer you are to those you relate to - The closer are they to you.
Yet, absence promotes both fondness and acceptance of separation.
Reunion promotes the same.

The further a seed falls from the bough the further is the bough from the seed.
