@Walter Hinteler,
In my opinion, as Europe becomes more "diverse" there is really a lessened national character that one can be sure of, since each country is attempting to manage its diverse population, perhaps. And, that might not be up to the standards of other countries, since the "diversity" might have a less than friendly agenda world-wide? What's the old saying, when a ship is sinking, "Every man for himself" (to get in the lifeboat)?

If history is a guide a lot more men and women will act with honor in lifeboats situations then otherwise.

I do not see the connection.

The NSA could eadily become a king maker. Any candidate for any elected post that they don't like, they can easily dig up dirt on them and get them out of the race. They have the means to chose the next president, for instance. No wonder everybody suck up to them, including Obama.

History as in the band on the RMS Titanic giving their lives to keep the passengers as calm as possible to say nothing of the engine gangs who gave their lives to keep the pumps and the power going to the end. For every man who acted shamefully there was far more men who acted with great honor.

An this information came from books and interviews with survivors and government investigations both in the US and the UK not damn movies.

The Musicians of the RMS Titanic all perished with the ship when it sank in 1912. They played music, intending to calm the passengers, for as long as they possibly could and all went down with the ship. All were recognized for their heroism.

Members of the Titanic orchestra
The ship's eight-member orchestra boarded at Southampton and travelled as second-class passengers. They were not on the payroll of the White Star Line, but were contracted to White Star by the Liverpool firm of C.W. & F.N. Black, who placed musicians on almost all British liners. Until the night of the sinking, the orchestra performed as two separate entities: a quintet led by violinist and official bandleader Wallace Hartley, that played at teatime, after-dinner concerts, and Sunday services, among other occasions; and the violin, cello and piano trio of Roger Bricoux, George Krins and Theodore Brailey, that played at the À La Carte Restaurant and the Café Parisien.[1]

When the Titanic struck the iceberg, it quickly became apparent that the ship’s "unsinkable" reputation was not true. The Titanic would be sitting at the bottom of the ocean in a little more than two hours. As the Titanic was sinking, passengers were loaded onto lifeboats by the deck crew. The engineering crew stayed at their posts to work the pumps, controlling flooding as much as possible. This action ensured the power stayed on during the evacuation and allowed the wireless radio system to keep sending distress calls. These men bravely kept at their work and helped save more than 700 people—even though it would cost them their own lives.

@BillRM,
I agree. I remember reading that two thirds of third class women survived, and two third of first class men died. Not a perfect stat but it still means that hundreds of rich men let hundreds of poor women and kids board those lifeboats...

Who wants gender equality now?

So far...one incident. And yet you make an assertion that "history shows us."

Bill...you exaggerate. You really have to get control over that.

Earlier you distorted what I have written in this forum...grossly distorted it. It was even more than exaggeration.

You ought to own up to having done that.

But history has shown you probably won't. Wink

Ya know...we will eventually, Olivier.

If history is any indicator...every powerful nation eventually does. It stops being powerful...and almost certainly America will cease to be the great world power it is.

Will that make you happy? Will it make you...excited?

@Frank Apisa,
Not really; I was more in disbelief that a poster would think that.

Did you understand the connection between mass spying and democracy, or is that still mysterious to you?

Are you referring to the government spying on the public since 2002, or big business spying on the public since 1970?

No. Of course it is folly.

Turnaround, adjusting goals: tantamount to impossible.

There really is none.

Sometimes "mass spying" is necessary to maintain a democracy; sometimes "mass spying" pollutes a democracy.

I do not have enough information yet to make a hard decision on this current issue yet.

I have to satisfy myself, after a fashion, with laughing at the many who think they do...and who are patting themselves on the back for having contributed to the destruction going on.
