Anyhow, re-addressing the OP, I'm glad that you still participate on A2K as your contributions are interesting and worthwhile.

I come here to be entertained and hopefully learn something new. A2K still does that for me. Over the years, I've learned to make my selections about what I read judiciously.

I don't see any need for some of these bots too but since they keep changing ID's, they are immune unless the boys in the front office write some code that keeps up with the posts
.

Simple solution would be to bounce the first or scond postings of a new account to someone to screen them.

The overhead is not likely to be any greater then the current system of having us reporting the spams and then having them look/removed same.

You know one thing I would love Robert to add is the ability to see who is doing the voting up or down on our postings.

It strange as there seems no logic that I can see as sometimes when I have posted a post that I am sure will result in down votes due to the emotions around a subject and get no votes one way or another and sometime I will have a posting that to me is similar to stating that the sky is blue that then resulted in more then a few votes downs.

As far as I'm concerned, you don't talk about rocks nearly enough. You've been slacking off. Very Happy

You're kidding, right? No, I know you're not, but the overhead you're referring to is far and beyond what the mods should be asked to do.

Why as they still need to look at and removed the spam postings now and if you limit it to new posters opening up new topics threads and the numbers of non-spammers who open up a new topic in their first or second postings can not be that large.

In fact I do not see all that many news threads opening in total that it would be a burden to run a fast eye over new posters opening up new tropics.

Maybe some of us will still be around a bit if Robert ever implements the bit of ignore where the one you are ignoring cannot see your posts.

Why is that? If you are ignoring someone, they are virtually dead to you. Why would you care whether they see your posts or not?

(If you don't reply to this, I'll know why! Wink )

Because you can start a thread and not have them turn up and hijack it with their interminable screeds all saying the same thing and their enablers are not tempted to write similar screeds condemning them. Presumably Boomer could do the same. Actually, it would require other people to become unseen by them, too.....as often my threads don't seem to,attract them, especially.....but the threads I am interested in do and are soon drowned. The enablers cause the most problems for me as I am reluctant to ignore them, so I can see their multiple arguing posts, which often quote what I wouldn't otherwise see, and the thread is overwhelmed by sheer volume of insult and hate.

@BillRM,
We've got a quarter million members, more or less. Many have never posted and many have only one post. It just wouldn't be cost effective, even with free labor. Anyway, they can probably look at the spam reports when they log in and catch 90 + percent of them without having to go and look.

You should take a look around A2K between 1am and 5am eastern time most days.

Also, just because you don't see them doesn't mean spam and new topics are not occurring. Many times after midnight, by the time I get around to reporting the spam, it has already been pulled by someone.

It would be interesting to see a one-time report on how much spam per month or per day is removed. I know there have been more than a few occasions when I've logged onto A2K late at night and found several pages of nothing but spam links for watching videos online.

@Butrflynet,
Totally agree! I wait until mid afternoon. I use to check in the morning but it was page after page of spam. Lost track of how many Download Free Movie threads I’d see. I felt sorry for the moderators. The first thing they have to do in the morning is read and delete.

@JeffreyEqualityNewma,
Would you find it useful to use CAPTCHA in new accounts set ups?

Or ask such questions as who is in Grant tomb pick at random from a large list of such questions.

@BillRM,
I’m not so sure that would stop them. These are robotic accounts and they would just find a way around the captcha.

@JeffreyEqualityNewma,
There are ways of getting around almost everything and with captcha you could take this site cattcha and hand the task of decoding it over to a human trying to log onto a porn site that the spammers have a relationship with.

But such things as captcha move the costs higher and frankly I do not think they now get any large payback for the span they do put on this site now so raising the cost seems like it might be a good idea.

Oh if most bots hit at a certain time period disable new accounts creation during those hours.

Just make it harder on them and they might go away or at least reduce the amount of resources they aim at the site.

It's just appalling what a thread entitled "Where is Sozobe" had lead to.
