A Memphis, Tenn., kindergarten student is in police custody after he fired a handgun in his elementary school cafeteria Thursday morning.

The incident didn't result in any injuries, and school is back in normal operation, school officials said.

The Westside Elementary School student, 5, brought the gun to school in his backpack Thursday morning, according to school officials at Westside and at the Shelby County schools superintendent's office.

While waiting for the opening bell in the cafeteria, the gun accidentally discharged once inside the boy's backpack at about 7:42 a.m. CT during breakfast and before school started at 8 a.m., school officials said.

Police in Connecticut say an 81-year-old man who was lying in wait with a rifle for a pesky raccoon accidentally shot himself after sneezing and falling from a chair.

New Haven police say James Pace Sr. shot himself in the shin at his home Saturday night. The injury wasn't life-threatening.

Pace told authorities that a raccoon had been scratching at his back door for several days and he was waiting for it with a .22-caliber rifle.

(CNN) -- A 3-year-old boy in a small Michigan town was killed over the weekend when he accidentally shot himself in the head with a gun he found on the closet floor of his home.

WAKE FOREST, N.C. —A woman is facing charges after she accidentally shot herself inside a North Carolina store.

The incident happened Thursday night at a Staples in Wake Forest, WNCN reported.

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The woman was shopping with her child when the child reached for her bag, which had a gun, investigators said. The woman then reached for the gun, but it went off, injuring her in the hand.

Wendell Docteur accidentally shot himself while riding a bicycle on May 3, but at the time told police he was shot by a gang of men wearing black hoodies over their faces.

Police were notified by a local hospital, which was treating Docteur for a gunshot wound to the right leg.

According to the Connecticut Post, Docteur also told police that the gang robbed him of his money, shot him and yelled, “North End, North End,” which is a neighborhood in Bridgeport, Conn.

However, Docteur was not able to explain to police why there was an exit bullet hole in his pants but not an entry hole.

An 83-year-old grandmother was shot – on National Grandparents Day – as two brothers fought over a cell phone Sunday in a Southwest Miami-Dade neighborhood, police said.

The grandmother, Marian Hall, was trying to break up the fight between her two adult grandchildren outside a Goulds home at 223rd Street and 117th Place, according to Miami-Dade Police.

At one point, one of the brothers, identified as 23-year-old Kenneth Smith, went inside and picked up a gun, officials said.

"Once inside the home, one of the brothers armed himself with a firearm where he intended to shoot at the brother and struck the grandmother in the leg," said Miami-Dade Police spokeswoman Robin Pinkard.

Identified as the two killed in the Ionia, Michigan shooting are James Pullum, 43, and Robert Taylor, 56. Both lived in Ionia, and it’s not clear how precisely the men became so enraged as to draw weapons and fire on one another fatally.

Local news source WZZM has a hazy initial account of the double gunshot death, describing the incident in a way that makes it seem as senseless as it sounds at first glance. According to the station, Pullum and Taylor pulled into a car wash and began shooting after the altercation broke out: “Witnesses tell WZZM 13 a one driver was following another driver too closely. The first driver pulled into the Wonder Wand Car Wash parking lot and the other driver followed them into the parking lot… Witnesses say the driver of the following car fired shots, and the first driver returned fire. Both drivers were shot and killed.”

Two passengers in Pullam’s vehicle were unharmed, but it also appears that neither man survived long enough to even be transported to a hospital after the deadly clash.

As both Pullam and Taylor were killed in the gun fight, investigators are having a hard time piecing together the chain of events leading up to the deadly incident.

However, cops do confirm both of the Michigan men involved in the fatal road rage shooting were legally licensed with concealed carry permits. It has not yet been explained whether one or the other may have been more legally culpable had either survived.

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

The Fayetteville Police Department said a 2-year-old girl died after accidentally shooting herself Saturday afternoon.

An off-duty correction officer accidentally shot himself and a colleague at a gas station in Brooklyn Friday as he was transferring the gun between holsters, authorities say.

The correction officer was transferring the gun from his pancake holster to his shoulder holster when the firearm discharged, a Department of Corrections spokesman said. The bullet hit the officer in the hand, then struck another off-duty officer in the hip.

DAUPHIN COUNTY, Pa. —A man accidentally shot himself in the leg Wednesday night while he was a passenger in a car and later died, according to Highspire police.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A 3-year-old boy remained in stable condition Tuesday after shooting himself with a gun left on his father’s bed.

It happened Monday night inside a home near College and Moulton.

Police say the 3-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in the stomach, after the boy’s father left a loaded handgun lying on his bed. Just before 7 p.m. on Monday night, the boy’s father, Nate Steward, 34, said he returned home from the store with his 3-year-old son and 10-year-old daughter.
