Kory Denton was hospitalized Thursday night after he attempted to fix a chamber jam in his friend’s SKS rifle. The bullet hit him in one of his main arteries.
“There's so much more that could have happened that didn't. If it would've hit a bone, it would've been a lot worse,” said Randy Denton, Kory’s father.
Denton said his son’s injury was an accident and that it could have happened to anyone. Experts on the SKS said a jam would most likely happen when a round is feeding from the magazine into the chamber. Denton said that malfunction is partially due to an untrustworthy gun.
“They're pretty unreliable, and I thought my boy would be smart enough to not mess around with one,” Denton said.
Denton said his son grew up with guns and took gun safety classes, because he enjoys hunting and fishing.
“I thought there was no way, being all the training my kids had, that something like this would ever happen to me. Boy, I was wrong,” he said.
