VERNON, Ind. (AP) - Authorities in southern Indiana say a teenager fatally shot in 12-year-old brother with a rifle he assumed was unloaded.
Jennings County sheriff's Sgt. James Blevins tells the Courier-Journal of Louisville, Ky. (http://cjky.it/19XVmcf ) that the younger boy died at the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis, where he was taken after he was shot in the head Monday.
PRESCOTT VALLEY, ARIZ. — A 4-year-old boy who was visiting Prescott Valley with his dad grabbed a loaded handgun from a television stand, asked what it was and pulled the trigger, killing the man in what police say was a tragic accident.
Justin Stanfield Thomas, 34, had traveled from Phoenix to a friend’s home on Friday to pick up some of his things from a duplex where he lived until earlier this year, police said. The boy quickly found a .380-caliber semi-automatic handgun, showed it to his dad and fired it, authorities said.
“Daddy got blood on him,” the boy later told investigators.
Police Sgt. Brandon Bonney said Monday that it didn’t appear that the tenant — James Williams, 26 — knew Thomas and his son would be visiting or had enough time to secure the weapon before they arrived.
BANGOR, Maine — The city’s new police chief was cleaning his newly issued weapon Monday afternoon and apparently shot himself in the hand, according to a press release issued by a city official Tuesday.
Chief Mark Hathaway, a 25-year veteran officer who was selected as the city’s chief in April, and other officers had just returned from training with their new guns in Brewer when the shooting took place.

The New Orleans Police Department said in a news release the girl was home alone Sunday, somehow found her mother's revolver, and accidentally shot herself in the head. The mother, 28-year-old Laderika Smith, will be booked on a charge of second-degree murder. Police say her negligence resulted in the death of her daughter.

According to Sacramento Police, Deandre Smith, 27, was in an alley near the intersection of Freeport Boulevard. and Fruitridge Road. when he accidentally fired his gun. He shot himself in the hand and his girlfriend in the lower body.
Both Smith and his girlfriend went to the hospital for treatment – that’s where hospital staff called the police.
WICHITA FALLS, Texas — A 9-year-old boy killed in an accidental shooting at his grandfather's North Texas home was visiting from Pennsylvania as part of a summer vacation.
Clay County Sheriff Kenny Lemons said Monday that Daniel Wiley of Harrisburg was killed when an unsecured shotgun discharged Friday, striking the boy in the face.
A 9-year-old Oakdale girl is expected to survive after her 5-year-old brother picked up a .22-caliber rifle and accidentally shot her in the chest, police said Friday night.
The girl, whose name was not released, was shot in the living room of her family’s home in the 1800 block of Helena Road, said Oakdale police officer Michelle Stark.
Police were called to the home about 6:30 p.m. The girl was able to talk with officers before an ambulance took her to Regions Hospital, where she remained Friday night, listed in stable condition with a noncritical injury, Stark said.

A make-shift memorial has been set up outside the Livingston Street Apartments where the shooting happened.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Police in Arkansas are investigating an accidental shooting at a Lions Club Gun Show in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
Authorities say when Charles Pike picked-up a gun off the table, the weapon fired, hitting him in the hand. The bullet then ricocheted off the floor and grazed another man.
Organizers say gun shows follow strict safety measures for both visitors and vendors, and they're unsure how exactly the shooting happened.
Guns shows are one of the safest places.... right after shooting ranges.

Neighbors tell WAVY.com the man was speeding through their neighborhood and when homeowners began yelling at him and making gestures for him to slow down, he exited his vehicle, waved a gun to intimidate them and accidentally shot himself.
