@Mame,
Take the A train uptown to 191st Street.
Walk up the stairs.
Take the elevator up to the street level.
Exit the subway building, go up another flight of stairs.
You are now on Fort Washington Ave.
Turn to your right and you will see the entrance of Ft. Tryon Park.
Like walking? Good.
It's a half a mile.
Enter the park and bear slightly to the left, walk down the long paved pathway with the Heather Garden on your right and stone walls on your left.
The path takes a sharp right turn at the bottom of a slope, the Cloisters will be in sight.
Follow the path around and over a bridge,....
WOW , look at that view of the Hudson! And The George Washington Bridge!!
Have a drink at the fountain.
Head towards the Cloisters. You'll need to go around the building on the sidewalks to the entrance.
~Don't want to walk?? Fine.
Wait at the bus stop right near the subway stairs. The M4 will arrive, use your Metro-card, the bus will take you down the hill and right to the Cloisters entrance.
NOTE:
The Cloisters is kept cold (not cool) all the time. Bring a sweater, sweatshirt or jacket to wear while you're looking at the finest collection of medieval art anywhere.

@Walter Hinteler,
heh.

I meant to write the finest collection of medieval art anywhere, in my neighborhood.

~~
When you visited a few years ago, you were within a mile of the Cloisters. Please forgive me for not mentioning it.

I know. But instead of going there, I went to a “shabby‑chic, bordello‑esque" restaurant and bar (The Bleu Evolution in West 187th Street, Mame, I honestly recommend it.)

@Joe Nation,
Did I ever tell you that the Heights are just the best part of the USA?

@tsarstepan,
I was walking out of my kitchen past the plate and photo/print and light switch wall and it dawned on me that the poster of Margaret Bourke-White was of her atop the Chrysler Building -
so I gotta insert photo here:

I saw a photo exhibit of her work when I was in Vigevano (near Milan). I didn't plan that, was just walking by the Castello di Vigevano in one of the main piazzas and saw the sign. Sooooo.... I wish for Mame some similar serendipities in NYC.
In my case it was a room of gorgeous photos I'd have hated to miss.

Did you ever get to Bergamot, Osso? Wonderful architectural tour I went on - amazing, actually. They offered The Last Supper in Milano our last day because it was peeling and they were about to close it. Unfortunately I couldn't make it that day. And now it is no more to be viewed.

@Mame,
No, dammit. But I think that's where a2k's Pantalones took a semester (or was it a year) at school abroad (he lives, or did live, in Tijuana, used to play fantasy sport with a lot of us).
I keep thinking there's a wooden bridge there - but no, that's Bassano.
So many places, so little time.
I did get to Cremona, which is also sort of near both Bergamo and Milano.

Oy, re The Last Supper.
I was only in Milano to change trains at two stations - spent about three hours wandering around the Duomo area - the galleria, the La Scala piazza (but not the building inside) and a cafe across from the front of the duomo (and not the duomo inside. I was hungry.)

edit - I should have stayed in Milan, didn't like Ivrea, which I went to so I could check out the piazzas where the orange hurling festivals happen.

@Walter Hinteler,
I will certainly do so if I am up that way - I have been reading the maps so much I think I know where I am and a minute later I'm confused. Smile Thank God I have a GPS on my phone.

I'm going to call everyone when I get to the hotel on the 1st of October and see what's up; next day I'm going to get a tracfone or something. I can Skype where there's wifi but that's not always convenient... "Hello, I'm here, where are you?" And I can recognize Joe from his photo but wouldn't know Boida or Tsar from a hole in the ground. Maybe they should send me a picture! Or at least carry a rose Smile ha ha

@Mame,
There's a recent photo of tsar here, boston meeting (neat photo, by the way).
Robbie, you'll know her, woman with the eyes looking atcha.
Also, a quick lip.

On the boston photo, I figure someone else will give a link, but I'll chase it if not.

@ossobuco,
That photo always gives me sweaty palms.
How the hell did she get out there?
How the hell will she get back?
Will she swing around on her knees while holding the camera??
And then what?

Stand up??!!

Still no relief for my soaking sopping wet palms.

You'll know Boida because she looks like a boid.....Tsar will be wearing his huge Bearskin hat.

@Roberta,
Love your choice of restaurant. And 7:00 is perfect. Alex has to get back to the hotel from the conference and we can head right up. Just let me know whose name the reservation is under so we can sit with the right people Smile
