Let the Bruhaha's begin!

Quote:
Anti-gay businesses across the country seem empowered in the wake of Chick-fil-A's dastardly statements that they openly and proudly support anti-gay causes financially. Enter "Masterpiece Cake Shop" located in the quiet hamlet of Lakewood, Colorado. The owner, Jack Phillips, proudly proclaims that he did indeed deny a gay couple service and says he would rather close his store than bake a cake for a gay wedding.

Thousands of people across the nation are now calling for a boycott...

..."We would close down that bakery before we closed our beliefs, so that may be what it comes to … we’ll see."

Would it have been wrong for a municipality to ban a company whose owners were in support of racial segregation or miscegenation laws before they were deemed unconstitutional?

Legally, they would have been within their rights, like the anti-hatechicken cities of today.

In accordance with equality morals, they would have been right.

It's the kiss of death for a person to use his/her company name to make political or social statements/opinions.

It makes me weary.

PS - how do you spell bruhaha, anyway?

@JPB,
I'm trying to reconcile this with Snood's position (as I understand it) that we can't be /shouldn't be offended by actions/comments against others.

I think you misread Snood....I took away that his position is that you should let people speak and think for themselves. If others are offended at how they are treated then it is they and not you who should be taking objection. It is not your right to treat others as they are your kids, you have no place trying to protect adults who are perfectly able to defend themselves. Your doing so is an invasion of their sovereignty and of their rights of self determination. If they want to let what you consider to be a slight go then you have no right to create a dust up in their name.

And your example is ridiculous...if your party will not be seated then you have been impacted, your object at that point is about what is being denied you, you are speaking for yourself. What I take to be Snoods position does not deny you this.

I personally like the idea that a restaurant would put in it's window
"Hi, we are in favor of a theocracy ruling this nation."
then I could take my dollars elsewhere and let everybody I know know about it.

I haven't seen one of those "We Reserve The Right To Refuse Service To Anyone." lately. I know there much still be a bunch of them out there.
They seem to always capitalize all the words rather than capitalize all the letters, that looks odd to me, but then I am odd.

I used to tell people at those restaurants that if they did refuse service to someone while I was there and I thought that someone was kinda like me, I was walking out and wouldn't be back.

@hawkeye10,
We clearly read Snood differently.

I think it's often good to present the most ridiculous example of something - simply to point out how ridiculous I think the base position is.

how so?

I can still go in and enjoy the meal I'd planned to have. My discriminated-against companions can go someplace willing to serve them.

For those who think it's important, yes, i misspelled brouhaha--by the time i realized that, it was too late to edit. If that sort of thing is important to you, tough ****.

Putting food in your belly is just a part of the meal experience. Meals are social events, and this hypothetical business is refusing to take part in your chosen planned social event. Your intended companions refusing to wear a shirt would normally be considered a good reason to refuse you, them being gay almost no one would consider to be a reasonable reason.

You need to pick another example, one where the offense that you are picking does not degrade your life, because this one does not work.

Chick-fil-A and gay marriage
The CEO of the fast food chain Chick-fil-A has spoken out against gay marriage. Does that make you more or less likely to eat there?

If the numbers are this evenly split in a Baltimore paper poll you can well imagine how well this plays for Chick-fil-a in the south where most of their stores are.

Chick-fil-A's anti-gay marriage stance has gotten some high-profile support by way of Mike Huckabee,....

An interesting stand by a guy who purportedly pushes people to eat healthier (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quit_Digging_Your_Grave_with_a_Knife_and_Fork), and even defended Michele Obama's "Let's Move" campaign against Sarah (I can see my house from Russia and I really like their dressing on my salad) Palin -

I mean, seriously, if you want people to eat healthier, why push them to eat any fast food at all?

Could this be ....
