On a corner of the main drag near me in Florida, they have set up a fireworks stand. I am hearing the sound of them already.
There are some people in this part of the country who are real horses' asses. Not only do they shoot off fireworks, but shoot guns into the air. I was reminded, in a local newspaper story, of a tragedy that happened last New Year's.
Some kid, minding his own business, got shot in the head, because some idiot shot into the air, probably not even realizing that the bullet has to go "somewhere".
Too bad the idiot who shot the gun will never have to pay for what he did. There is absolutely no way that that individual can be determined.
My hope is that there are some idiots out there with guilty consciences, who won't shoot THIS year.
Yes. I find it interesting that I reacted with great panic, as it was, even as I was near gasping about could this be, somehow completely believable that that was going on now.
Umm...The Gawker has hardly any actual credible journalistic credentials. While it seems easy to believe that this could happen, I hold some doubt that it actually did. However, living right next door to Manatee County in Sarasota County, I'll be careful whom I pick as my partners and assure the quality of my performance as well as I can.
The Gawker isn't a tabloid news source. It's a news aggregate like The Huffington Post. They steal... umm... borrow news stories from legitimate sources like AP and repost them onto their site.
Regardless of its category, AFAIK it has poor credibility journalistically. Gawker is simply a blog that "focuses on media news and gossip and focuses on celebrities and the media industry. "
They have gone through many 'good' writers as they seem to square off with the powers-that-be that run it. As I wrote prior, I have my doubts as the article's truth. Has any other source backed this story up?
I see your point. It's a respectable one. As for this story, it's of those alleged news stories in which I don't care enough to actually look for an actual recognized news media. It's one of those oh look at that as I soon forget that I even read about it a click or two later.
Agreed! Sort of like cotton candy...it melts in a second.
OTOH, with regards to so. FL, in the 3 yrs since I've been located adjacent to that county, I've yet to meet this sort of person, but I'm not feeling too deprived.

The first comment was guaranteed to stir the pot.

OLDSMAR, Fla. - Pinellas SPCA seized around 300 animals ranging from reptiles to hamsters from a home in Oldsmar Sunday, Pinellas Sheriff deputies say.
Deputies initially responded to the residence, located at 206 Lee Street, around 6 a.m. Sunday morning, after the couple living there reported the 16 month old they were caring for was missing.
Jeffrey O’Neil, 28, and Jennifer Kovacs, 26, claimed the child had managed to get out of its crib, open the front door and leave. They told deputies the child had been missing for about an hour.
A communication professor known for conspiracy theories has stirred controversy at Florida Atlantic University with claims that last month's Newtown, Conn., school shootings did not happen as reported — or may not have happened at all.
Moreover, James Tracy asserts in radio interviews and on his memoryholeblog.com. that trained "crisis actors" may have been employed by the Obama administration in an effort to shape public opinion in favor of the event's true purpose: gun control.
"As documents relating to the Sandy Hook shooting continue to be assessed and interpreted by independent researchers, there is a growing awareness that the media coverage of the massacre of 26 children and adults was intended primarily for public consumption to further larger political ends," writes Tracy, a tenured associate professor of media history at FAU and a former union leader.
In another post, he says, "While it sounds like an outrageous claim, one is left to inquire whether the Sandy Hook shooting ever took place — at least in the way law enforcement authorities and the nation's news media have described."
I expect a certain micropopulation here at a2k will start using this conspiracy theory as talking points against the Obama administration now. ((sigh))

@jcboy,
I, at first, thought the child was missing INSIDE the house. I think the kid was just trying to get out of the stench.
