Silly me! And I thought it was sexually transmitted! Or...were you implying that their leaders are screwing them? No, that couldn't be it. If that were the cause, there'd be a 98% rate in the U.S.

A decade ago Uganda and South Africa had similar rates of infection (about 8%), South Africa took no action with respect to public information and education and its President even publically speculated that the disease was a foreign plot. Uganda undertook a well organized program of public education, emphasizing monagamy generally, and abstinence for the young. Today the rate in Uganda is 5% and falling. In South Africa it is 21% and rising fast.

Silly you indeed.

I am well aware of the political process that has led to soaring AIDS rates in Africa, george, and I agree that it is a very serious matter. I was simply laughing at your choice of words. Let's not fight.

Dartboard? I don't suppose my rifle targets (the first & the best ones I've ever done) would qualify as a substitute?

Who will I vote for? Well, so far, my choice is "stay home & get an extra hour of sleep".

Actually, even if you vote on national issues in the US your vote doesn't count. It's the Electorial College that picks the US President, not the people. I don't know why we even vote. The popular number means nothing. It's only a group of chosen electors that aren't even chosen by the people that pick the president.

How exactly does the electoral college work? I'm not sure that it means your vote doesn't count at all. Or does it?

.........."Well, he would have to see about getting Pablo a cigar. That was what that face really needed to complete it; a half chewed cigar. Where could he get Pablo a cigar?

"How does it go?" Robert Jordan asked politely.

"Very well," Pablo said and nodded his head heavily and judiciously. "Muy bein."

"You've thought up something?" Agustin asked from where they were playing cards.

"Yes," Pablo said. "Various things."

"Where did you find them? In that bowl?" Agustin demanded.

"Perhaps," Pablo said. "Who knows? Maria, fill the bowl, will you please?"

"In the wineskin itself there should be some fine ideas," Agustin turned back to the card game. "Why don't you crawl in and look for them inside the skin."

"Nay," said Pablo equably. "I search for them in the bowl."

I find it ironic that the poster who started this thread is a self-confessed non-voter!

I would think the ideal candidate is someone who encompasses all three qualities. I also can't help but think that the best person for the country would also be the best person in international affairs.

Don't they teach you that stuff in school? The one interesting aspect of the electoral college is that the elector has the power to go against the majority votes and cast for anyone on the ballot. I wuz hopin' that would happen with the Bush-Gore fiasco of 2000, but such was not the case.

Here is a primer for ya kickycan.

And about the electoral college. I did learn that in school, but over the years I lost the details somewhere along the way. I just wasn't sure how many there were, or where their accountability lies.

The problem with the electoral college is that we can have a president with less popular votes.
