You guys aren't paying much attention to what's actually happened, then. I can't say it any plainer than that.

I think you can't see the slide as you are further to the right than you realize. You grew up in the middle of America's slide to the right.

this is one specific point of yours that I'd like to comment on. If it weren't for Mr. Obama, the U.S. would have fewer allies left than it does.

I think he should get credit for this slight improvement for the U.S. Things were getting pretty unpleasant on the international front for the U.S., and I do think Mr. Obama has turned that around a bit. Still a way to go though.

@ehBeth,
I don't know that I can agree with that, ehBeth. The USA was waaaay right wing back in the 1950s. Then came the baby generation -- beatniks, hippies, etc. -- and the seesaw tilted and everyone became "liberal" for lack of a better word. The Nixon administration was actually a gosend for the liberals. Suddenly, the GOP was no longer trustworthy and Carter sailed into the Oval Office. Since then it's been something of a seesaw again -- left to right and back. Right now, you're right, we seem to be in a right-wing swing, but it's by no means a steady trend.

Don't let people tell you Obama is responsible for raising the debt.

While I'm busy C&Pasting. Bernie is my hero.

Oh, I don't blame EB and I sympathize with his feelings. I just don't think his choice of a solution to the moral dilemma is well thought out.

Where'n'hell did I pull that quote from if it wasn't by you? Now I can't find it anywhere on the damn' thread!

Though it's pretty well known that EB and I are almost polar opposites, I can relate to, and share the frustration. I will vote, and I know who I won't be voting for. As to who I will vote for, that is somewhat undecided.

@Lustig Andrei,
I can only compare things back to the mid-1970's, when I started to pay attention to American politics. When I compare Americans I knew then (mostly lower/lower-middle class people from northern New York State - not exactly a liberal utopia at any time) to Americans I know now - and I compare what I know of the overall politics of the country - things in the U.S. feel very right of where they were in the 1970's and 1980's.

@ehBeth,
Oh, sure, compared to '70s and '80s, you're absolutely right. We've gone from violently protesting the war (in Vietnam) to wildly cheering troops returning from the war (in Iraq or Afghanistan). I agree. But I see it as a seesaw, not a general historic trend. The next move has to be to the left. I thought Obama's election was a good begining.

You can post things I agree with, like these, but it does not change the fact the nation is steadily sliding to the right.

You don't have one of those, Merry, but you're hardly the only one.

You guys really aren't listening. Nixon could be the Dem candidate in 2012 and you haven't a clue how serious this has become.

Oh, I know - [whine,whine] What will happen to the US? We poor sots are suffering so! [whine whine]

Anybody who read my initial post, the CP, it was pointed out that Nixon's policies were way left of every succeeding president except Carter.

How might that be? Has it been US policy to encourage their coterie of worldwide dictators to stop torturing and murdering their citizens. Next, we're gonna hear how the US started the Arab Spring.

@panzade,
Gee, Reagan increased the debt by 189% and he still didn't have enough money for his program to rape, torture and murder 300,000 innocents in Central America.

So what did he do? Well, garshucks, he just followed that old 'Merican way, he started a business selling arms, which of course, he never paid for, to the Iranians and then he funneled that loot to the terrorists he had hired to wreak havoc in those same Central American countries.

I think it's time for another real war criminal. Come on, America, let's get one that puts the Reagan/Bush/Bush crew to shame.

Bernie Sanders is another guy that is way way too honest to be involved in US politics. Ever notice how few and far between these guys are?
