@msolga,
i would think so

i liked Hitchhikers guide, but was never able to get into the Dirk books

Bleak Old Shop is quite good (what i saw anyway), think Dickens filtered through Blackadder

@djjd62,
OK, I'm going to get stuck into some sampling of those on youtube!

You know, we hardly ever see anything made in Canada.
I wonder why that is? Confused
Bet there are plenty of good programs to choose from.

@msolga,
actually, a while back listening to the Country Breakfast podcast, they were advertising a Canadian show called Heartland on DVD

it's about the trials and tribulations of a horse farm in the prairies, i would imagine it appeal to outback folks quite a bit

as for programming, lots of good stuff, but not a lot of output, really small market, some of the stuff is quite homegrown, but just as much is kind of geared to the American market, sort of American lite

some links to some Canadian shows

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heartland_%28Canadian_TV_series%29
still being made

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_of_60
no longer produced

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arctic_Air
first season just ended, made by the same producers as North of 60, might appeal to Ausies, think the Outback but cold

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republic_of_Doyle
humorous detective show, Russell Crowe starred in the most recent series opening episode

@djjd62,
Ah, I see that Heartland is on ABC2.
No wonder I haven't seen it.
Same with the Republic of Doyle.

@msolga,
i've never watched it, not really my cup of tea

North of 60 was a great drama series

Arctic Air is still fairly new, but quite enjoyable so far

Doyle is a laugh, a very regional (Newfoundland) slice of Canadian life

@djjd62,
Yes, Doyle did sound interesting, from the program descriptions.
I'm can see I'm going to have to do something about my ABC2 reception!

@msolga,
Two big shows in Canada that were hits with the world wide audience were "Corner Gas" and "Little Mosque on the Prairie", both filmed partially in Saskatchewan.

@msolga,
There are a ton of shows made in Canada, and unless you recognize stuff you'd never know it. For example, the new show "Once upon a Time" is fimed in the Vancouver area. Not really Canuck shows but they are filled with lots of local actors, stage crews, scenery and tax breaks...

@Ceili,
Yeah, I figured there'd be heaps of good Canadian tv, Ceili.
I was just perplexed about we've seen so little of it in Oz!
Odd.
Maybe there's more on pay tv (which I don't have) than on free to air?

@Ceili,
Yeah, Canada has a huge depth of acting and comedy talent. I know this personally as a young family friend is part of that theatre scene - he's local talent in Toronto area and has been for over 10 yrs. He's played lead rolls in Canadian productions of Tommy, etc.

Speaking of Canadian talent (and production companies), a huge amount of the comedians we often see here in USA are Canadians. Mercy, I was surprised to what extent it is.

@Ragman,
I'd have to go back to Ceili's Canada thread to give you actual names, Ragman, but she & others posted quite a few examples of Canadian comedians (quite early in the thread). Really enjoyed watching.

Anybody familiar with Whitechapel, on BBC America? I had never heard of it. I saw a story on it, and the fact the the new season starts on Wednesday, at 10 p.m.

Sounds like my kind of show. Anybody care to venture an opinion?

I think we have a wealth of comedians because we can laugh at ourselves..

I thought Canadians laughed so much in an effort to warm the body during the long and brutal Canadian winter.
