@izzythepush,
Apples are an interesting plant series from a genetic standpoint. Their histroy goes back at least to the Cretaceous and some say the Jurassic at the dawn of angiosperms. The apples genome is actually twice as big as that of humans. Genes arent a measure of complexity but are the bookkeeping of an organisms history with many genes that are turned off , then later on, and then later still, off again. SO all this is recorded in the genopme . The genetics expewriment (some of my colleagues were taking part in the cross linking of the genome of the rose and the apple in paleo history) Roses were present in the MAericas but apples werent , yet both belong to the same order of plants. They say that apples came originally from Eastern Turkey (thats where they are most diverse) an had spread to the rest of Asia.
Apples in the AMericas were actually a positive product in what became known as the "columbian WExchange" where, after the Spaniards invasions, things like diseases, pests, weeds , cattle, chickens and apples came to the Americas while Europe got things like corn, potatoes, tomatoes, cucurbit plants, and most of its gold
