@firefly,
Quote:
That move came amid a worrisome development in Friday’s debt-limit drama: the ongoing talks between Reid and McConnell appeared to have broken down and it was unclear whether either leader was talking with the other.

“Well, we have a curious situation here where the majority doesn’t seem to want to vote on its own proposal,” was McConnell’s answer when asked as he exited the Senate chamber late Friday how the talks with Reid were progressing.

Not good, not good at all....at this point we seem to be down to REID/McCONNELL saving the day or Obama ignoring the debt ceiling. Of course Congress watchers everywhere know that expecting either Reid or McConnell to be responsible adults is a fools errand.

@hawkeye10,
This quote taken from the NYT article.

Quote:
“Certainly there’s satisfaction in it,” Mr. Brooks said of his legislative victory. “That’s why I ran for office. You want to help your country.”

They don't see all the people who they ran over and "killed" in their zeal for their one dimensional goal to cut expenses. They don't realize the economic crisis they have created in all the economies - both relatively strong and weak - and the loss of equity and security for many people around the world.

They also don't see the damage they have already caused all the economies of the world. That's because they are extreme terrorists who doesn't care about collateral damage.

The 87 members of the tea party are creating more havoc in this world than all the members of al qaida and taliban combined.

@High Seas,
Quote:

Repeat:
1. August 2 is a fictitious deadline. It's an estimated deadline that could change based on tax receipts. Business leaders have proposed prepaying their taxes if a deal is close so the government won't run out of money. The reason for Aug 2 is on Aug 3 SS checks are supposed to go out. That is a lot of money to put out on one day.
2. Payments on federal debt - and all payments from Social Security - are safe for years. Payment on SS is only as safe as the ability of the general fund to pay it back. The general fund takes in 1.3 trillion, but needs to pay out almost twice that amount. The deficit isn't a result of SS. It's a result of too much spending that is supposed to be covered by income taxes. Raise the damn taxes already because you can't cut enough without eliminating the military.
3. There's enough money in the Treasury as of close of business yesterday to cover all expenses until at least August 15. This panicky charade is disgraceful! Let's hope there is but if we set the deadline at Aug 15, we would still be trying to create a deal then.

@High Seas,
If you want to argue that our debt is 100% of GDP then you need to look at your argument about how SS is" safe". You are arguing we have the money to pay back SS at the same time you are claiming SS funds aren't safe because it is debt.

@parados,
Your "blue" should be in bold red.

This is almost too funny to contemplate. The three major rating agencies are now backing off and saying there isn't any urgency on the August 2 deadline. They're now saying that what matters is that the government make $4 trillion in cuts to retain their triple A rating.

These are the same agencies that didn't say anything about the mortgage derivatives, and the increasing debt over the many years.

This is a farce added to what's going on in Washington DC.

I think they're all pretty stupid!

that is the way that most of the press is pitching the story. But radicals know that one must break some eggs to make an omelet, that death must come so that what is to come next can be born, they are focused on what will come next not the current carnage. I think that the current media effort on this story will go far to convince those on the right who have been hold-outs that the media is very biased towards the left. This validates what that the right wing culture warriors have been saying for years, the lack of empathy and willingness to understand where those on the right are coming from is damaging.

Reid's bill won't likely pass, which will drag this out even longer.

43 Republican senators announce opposition to Reid debt-limit plan
By Felicia Sonmez
Forty-three Republican senators on Saturday penned a letter outlining their opposition to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s bill to raise the country’s debt ceiling, a move that ensures the measure will fall short of the 60-vote threshold necessary to avoid a filibuster.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) announced on the floor shortly after the chamber convened Saturday afternoon that the senators had delivered the letter to Reid’s office.

The move means that even if Reid (D-Nev.) were to secure the support of all 53 members of the Democratic caucus as well as the four Republicans who did not sign the letter, his bill would still fall three votes short of the threshold.

Time is running out...

I am concerned about the reaction of the U.S. stock market on Monday and Tuesday. It closed Friday at its lowest point in a year. And the uncertainty will likely unsettle global markets as well.

Reid is quite likely the most worthless sack of **** who has ever run a chamber of Congress during my lifetime, he even beats Gingrich. Dont hold your breath waiting for him to save the day.

They aren't trying to make an omelet--they are trying to destroy the supply of eggs at a time when the eggs are a vital source of food for an entire population.

You are giving these people credit for trying to create something, when their stated goals have more to do with destruction--they are anti-government. What's being demonstrated is that people who are anti-government can't be entrusted with the job of running that government.

The media reporting on the debt ceiling debate has been rather unbiased. If anything, the American people can judge for themselves what this Tea Party has done, and is continuing to do, and see for themselves the ramifications on the U.S. and global economies--the tea they brew is toxic. They are bringing the U.S. economy to the brink of disaster.

The Tea Partiers have such a stranglehold on the Republican party, and have rendered that party so dysfunctional, that they will ensure Obama's re-election.

@hawkeye10,
hawk, What makes you believe the tea party is making an omelet? Even the making of an omelet requires a pan, some oil and a heat source; in other words, it can't be made on its own. They're saying they don't need anything else. Your omelet analogy fails.

I have not made up my mind, I am however illuminating what they think they are doing, if they are to be believed, which I am willing to do because there is no reason to not take them at their word.

Except those elected to run the government should not be trying to shut it down, or destroy the economy--they are not fulfilling their responsibilities as members of Congress regarding debts which Congress has already racked up. The debt ceiling has to do with debts already owed--existing obligations which must be met. These Tea Party people were not elected to destroy "the full faith and credit of the United States"--they were elected to keep the U.S. functioning.
