@cicerone imposter,
My point is even with a thriving auto industry it will not save Detroit because of the use of robotics.

What (i think) Detroit needs is the housing market to somehow slash housing prices and rentals in half to entice a diverse set of people to move into the city and with more people there will be more need for service jobs. That is a start.

The auto industry could contribute to neighborhood improvement plans... That is the least they could do in their new found government resuscitated wealth.

Corporations need to give back to America and the world they have exploited for so long and not just continue to take take take...

@RexRed,
How any state or city can revitalize their economy is a difficult one to solve, because of the many bad press and other issues involved.

I don't think it's just housing cost.

@cicerone imposter,
No, it is cost and renovation, gotta spend money to make money.

It comes back to infrastructure which Obama tried to implement in a big way that the repugs once again blocked to protect their cronies bottom line. Eventually America will fall into the dust and the entire country will suffer as Detroit is due to the republicans and their senseless greed.

And remember who caused the recession it was republicans... So putting them back in power will only facilitate another horrendous war and nothing will be done about our aging infrastructure. The only thing we have going for us is we don't have sharia law but secular law. This is a draw for most even if it means living in a crumbling infrastructure with bridges collapsing left and right.

I yet the tea parties plans for our secular law will put an end to even that draw...

Are people going to fly all the way from France to hear Pat Robertson banter about how evil oral sex is? Not likely...

@RexRed,
I disagree; it's efficiency and quality.

However, I agree that R&D is very important to contain cost, create new products that have a high demand, and to increase efficiency and quality.

Just "spending money" is no solution. That's been shown by both government and private enterprise.

@cicerone imposter,
So you think leaving the slums in Detroit, neglecting falling bridges, and crumbling roads will attract tourism, growth and pride in community? Having rents so high that people can't afford to move in so building stay vacant is the answer? Sorry if I seem sarcastic friend.

Dumping money is like giving tax breaks to the wealthy... I don't see investing in community and infrastructure as "dumping money", sorry.

Investing in a predominantly black community that needs a helping hand is no more "dumping money" than investing in any other racially dominated community. With the billions in government waste It's time to put the focus towards communities (yes, even black ones) and not corporations that are hemorrhaging in high paid CEO cash as it is.

I believe you are not being racist CI but I just thought I would delve into the issue.

I say yes! bail out Detroit, but not with republicans running the bailout... They will only siphon the money off to bridges to nowhere, their rich corporate cronies and favoritism to the privileged....

If Geroge W. Bush can give Pakistan several billions of dollars that simply errr, "gets lost" Detroit certainly deserves a try. And how much do we pay Egypt annually again?

@RexRed,
No, absolutely not! I never said that infrastructure is not important. That's Econ 101. I even wrote a paper in college about Iran's economy, and the primary emphasis was that they needed to improve their infrastructure before their economy can grow.

That's also true of the US today; our infrastructure is being neglected, and the long term effect will be loss of opportunity in the future.

In my many travels around the world, I find better roads and bridges in poorer countries. Their government knows better than our reps in Washington DC.

Rex, That's not "new heights." They've been there for so long, they lost oxygen to their brains. You know what that means!~
