Exercise is an incredible help. In my own experience thirty minutes on the bike or walking at a pace somewhat above the ambling rate is good for a 70 point reduction in Mgd. This is with type II diabetes. Now, it sounds like you might have type I, but exercise is supposed to be at least somewhat helpful there, too.
As far as low blood sugar during exercise, I favor exercise
after eating. This is contrary to the official advice, but I find that once I get into hypoglycemia, I eat and don't stop till I can't hold any more. Anyway, if it happens while riding, carry a bottle of gatoraid or flat coke. They're not as good as skim milk, but who wants a bottle of milk on a bike.
No expert here, Steve. I'm kind of sharing personal experience, and after seven years I only started medication in December. I've no experience with insulin.
