@izzythepush,
I don't think of you as a missionary. I understand that you take a more middle-of-the-road approach to religion, even though you are not particularly religious yourself. Which, as far as I'm concerned, is fine. What I don't understand is why you expect other people to adopt your position.
Quote:I tried to leave on reasonably amicable terms, but Zardoz came back accusing me of preaching religion when I've stuck to socialism.
I don't think Zardoz accused you of "preaching" religion and I know that I haven't. By returning to respond to Zardoz you're only ensuring that religion will remain topical in this thread.

And to be honest I'm sick of you both going off on tangents and deliberately misrepresenting what I'm saying.
I think you've misrepresented what both of us have said. For example, you're the only one who mentions "atheism". Neither Zardoz nor I have promoted it.
Quote:The point have trying to make is that you won't succeed in any form of "liberal" thinking without accomodating people of faith.
I don't think this thread was specifically dedicated to promoting political liberalism. And what we say here has no influence on political culture anyway. The OP writes down his thoughts and that's it. It's not supposed to be a manifesto or handbook for political organizers.
In any case, many religious people have accommodated themselves to living in a secular society – I don't think their sensitivities are so delicate that they can't make common cause with non-believers in pursuit of mutually shared goals.
Quote:It's what you've been doing all along and it's a lot easier than responding to any of the points I've made.
I've responded to your points and you've ignored them. When I've asked you to clarify your points you've ignored my requests. You never identified the 19th century scientists who had never seen a meteorite, for instance. It's difficult to respond to ideas which aren't fully developed.
