Is it depressing, to the modern Conservative; this realization that the battle you wage is a losing one? You cannot hold the line, and you know it. But when you have a large personal interest in maintaining the status quo, I understand why you would want to. The only real question is why you guys think that you are fooling anyone.

This is indeed a strange comment, coming as it does during the decade of the increasingly successful capitalization of the largest formerly socialist country in the world, one that now represents a serious competitive threat to us. Strange too in relation to the ongoing financial collapse of excessive government controlled social welfare systems in Europe; the demise of private sector labor unions in this country and the recent wave of conservative political victories in state and national elections here.
Just who here is really whistling in the dark?
You are, George. Do you honestly assert that the world is somehow becoming more Conservative, or starting to hew to more Conservative models? Because there is, oh, a ton of evidence that the exact opposite is happening.
You seem to be claiming that these short-term events are somehow predictors of long-term trends, and I see little to no evidence of that. In fact, if you would bother to take a look at what's going on today in this country, I think you will find that the group who was voted into office last Fall have proven themselves to be rather unpopular with the country as a whole. The proposed plan your party has put forth - Ryan's budget, the attempt to codify Greed as the permanent national ethos - has been universally panned and the public hates pretty much every element of it.
Look through a larger lens. Socially, the world is liberalizing very, very quickly. Here in the states, liberal positions are winning the day - such as gay marriage, which now garners majority support in pretty much every national poll out there - and the last decade has seen a massive expansion of the safety net here in America, in the form of Medicare D and the ACA, passed by Obama and the Dems last year.
While you're busy crowing around changes in Europe - which to me seem to be transitory, as the people who live there don't really feel any different about the obligations of the government - my side is busy winning the battle here at home. You lost the battle over Medicare and SS; the populace loves these programs and they are never going away. Soon it will be the same with health care. What fight are you going to lose next?
I repeat that in your heart you know that this is the case, and that it fills you with fear. And that is why you guys don't like Obama. He's a very successful leader of the faction that is going to continue winning that fight.
