NO and LA were managed by Democrats during Katrina.
The city was managed by democrats, but the pumps, and the levies, all in disrepair and FEMA were in the federal government in control... I do not doubt that the situation as a whole was and is the product of both parties and of the irresponsibility consequential of having two parties, each able to lay off blame on each other... None the less, timely action was not taken by the federal government which was the only group capable, and while the danger was evident, timely information and evacuation was denied to the people... The whole situation is retarded... Why do so many people live below sea level next to a lake that is essentially over their heads in a hurricane zone next to a great river that would not even run near them but for the intervention of the U.S. Government??? The failure of government cannot be laid on one party or the other, but can only be laid on both... The democrats could not stop Bush from going to war... For him it was a win/win situation... If the Democrats did not give hum war powers they would seem unpatriotic, and be defeated in the wake of 911... And if they gave him war powers, which was really a flush hand of powers with which to deal and negotiate to America's benefit, then he had what he really wanted, and that was war... If you are really educated, then you must realize the cost of such behavior, what it takes to maintain armies far distant from home, and to compare that cost with possible gain... Those people did not... The benefits of war, to them, were in the cost which they could lay off on the people while their friends profiteered... If a war is worth doing, it is worth doing for absolutely no profit... But what does it profit us to rule some hell hole like Afghanistan only to flush our economy down the toilet... What does it profit this nation to build up a town like New Orleans as a relic of a river that would have long ago wandered away without the intervention of the government??? It is the real job of government to act rationally, and to help protect the people from the effects of unreason... It is the job of government to give the people the truth and let them act according to it; but when the governemnt leads the people in irrationality, in faith, in hope in continued good fortune it is no government at all...

But seriously. We now have a President who plays golf and parties with reporters when Japan is on the brink of a nuclear meltdown. And not one criticism from the media.
What do you expect him to do about it??? He did not build those plants in an earthquake zone, and it is another sovereign country, and they likely have much more control of our lives and economy than we have of theirs... Why we are sending those people help of any sort after all they have taken out of this country is beyond understanding... After all that has be written and said decrying our use of Nuclear weapons on them, to see them use Nuclear power without regard to danger is both sad and amazing... I think they must be sub human... They have zero regard for the environment or each other... I knew a man who was once a prisoner of the Japanese... They would find humor in the death of one of their own as much as in the death of an enemy...I know what they will say about the damage they are doing and the deaths they are causing already... They will say too bad, and so sad, and let's go make some money... How can anyone deal with such people??? They do not even reach the level of animals on the love-ability scale...

Bush can't micromanage everything that happens. The Louisiana government was responsible for the details. They blew it.
Really??? Do you think there are not overlapping spheres of authority, that the people of a local area are not citizens of their cities, states, and nation??? No doubt, a city like new Orleons does not support the federal government nearly so much as it is supported by them, but then; why is a city like that supported is such a place, with the people so destitute and without resources while all manor of wealth is taken from the place and floats by them every year??? Just as the parties lay off responsibility on each other to avoid taking it on themselves, each wishing power without responsibility, so do our redundant governments take power but shed responsibility... If we had but one government, it would have fallen long ago... We are in reality like Caligula who wished that all the Senators had but one head so he could cut it off...When government does not serve the people on any level we do not know who to blame, but we know we are hurting...

I voted against obama,
and I will again, but in fairness:
that is not an American problem.

When we had trouble with 3 Mile Island,
we did not expect the Japs to show up over here.

In that final statement you displayed complete lack of humanity.

As to the Japanese using nuclear power after the United States twice bombed their land with nuclear weapons, then why is the United States using nuclear power? Add to that the Three Mile Island matter we have even less right. Or is this where you play the Oppenheimer card?

You desire to compare their regard for the environment to that of the United States. Really want to there go? Better not as the United States fails again and again.

Obama is said to be depressed, #3's economy is going to be hit hard by this tragedy and this
will slow and possibly stall his (pREZBo) efforts to drive this countries economy below that of Japan's.

If this is true, the American people will owe the Japanese people a lifetime dept of gratitude and solidarity.

Go out and buy a new Japanese vehicle today - they need the money.

@Fido,
The most dramatic thing about the Katrina debacle was a public statement made by the Salvation Army several days after the storm abated: we are used to being first on the scene but we are not used to being the only first responder. What the Salvation Army had to say indicts not just governmental agencies but charities as well.

Yep, liberal progressive democrat leadership in the state of Louisiana dropped
the ball long before, during and after Katrina... Epic failure for the left.

@plainoldme,
Perhaps true. Those missing first responders were from the State of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans - just as Lash wrote. The failed levees were the property of the state of Louisiana which was responsible for their maintenance. In fact Federal funda appropriated for their upgrade in the late 1990s were diverted by an earmark written by Louisiana Democrat Senator J. Bennet Johnson for the construction of a new ship channel interestingly named "The J. Bennet Johnson shipway". Perversely this contributed to the rapid transmission of the storm surge to Lake Ponchatrain - the event that caused most of the flooding and damage. It was the long-tern corruption and incompetence of the Louisiana authorities that made the disaster there far worse than it was in neighboring states that were hit just as badly by the same storm.

It is part of the reason I cannot feel much love for my fellow Americans: They have so little self love...

Look at it: If you have children, but are destroying the very environment their children will need to survive, and yet your thought is either that God will provide for them, or the end of the world will suddenly arrive so it does not matter what of this life we destroy then you are not showing love or acting rationally; and neither situation demands my love, but my outrage.
