@Region Philbis,
At the other end of the state, it snowed. Heavy, wet snow. I went down to try to break up the ice at the foot of the driveway but it was difficult to make a dent in it.

I have been trying to do a test drive on a writers' workshop for several weeks. The group's meeting was cancelled three of the four times due to weather, including today's cancellation for driving conditions. I ended up taking care of my computer with tech services the fourth week.

I shamefacedly have to admit that I still have things in boxes after my move. One of the "mitigating factors" is that my old house had built in storage for books and dishes and I do not have furniture to replace the old built ins. I knew there were some nice pads of paper in an unopened box, but I couldn't find them. I did find my Jane Austen action figure, which I regarded as an endorsement for the group.

I ran upstairs to my computer to get the directions to the meeting when I noticed an email from the leader: cancelled because of driving conditions.

Sigh.

@Finn dAbuzz,
Finn, are the local services (road/hydro crews etc) prepared to handle that sort of an event on a regular (or irregular) basis?

@ehBeth,
Not in the least.

When we get ice here we wait for the Sun to save us.

Thankfully it look like like the Sun and high (enough) temps will free us from our homes on Thursday.

No city in the "South" is going to invest in snow plows and de-icers, nor should they.

I grew up in the North and I hate any winter that resembles the ones I loved as a kid.

You can't ski in Dallas, and if you can have fun on a sleigh, you're parents are either miserable or losing money.

I hate the cold!

I landed in Dallas a few years ago during an ice storm. It was pretty scary. I too hate the cold unfortunately, I'm stuck for a few more years. I dream of moving to Belize.
Then I'll have nightmares of Hurricanes, I guess. Ah well, nothings perfect...

@Ceili,
Yes, when I moved to the warm south about 30 years ago, I was delighted to leave the cold North but I found that while New York had blizzards, it didn't have tornados, pink lightning, and simple thunder storms that could fell trees.

Scary moments are a happy trade for miserable weeks.

@joefromchicago,
Does this mean I should stay away from Chicago until summer?

My son got frostbite without leaving the house. His girlfriend's mother, a nurse, diagnosed it. He lost his wool socks.

Sounds like a COLD house.

I 'm glad I 'm going to Florida in a few hours.

@OmSigDAVID,
We set the thermostat at 48 when we sleep and at 52 during the day when we are awake. I do not live beyond my means. I bought him two pairs of wool socks last winter but he can not find them. I wear wool socks and am fine.

If I made more money, we would dial up to 60, the temperature the thermostat was set at back in the day.

Major melt off here this week. Flooding will probably occur along the river. In the meantime, Korea got hit with a "snow bomb"

Well, at least until the spring.

Meanwhile, with temperatures expected to be above freezing for the rest of the week, get ready for SLUSHAPALOOZA 2011 !!!!!

There are still a couple of parking spots on my street being reserved with dibs chairs, even though we had a major melt this weekend. That's simply uncalled for.
