@Arella Mae,
ok that's kind of funny - how does a woman that tall get pants that are too long?

(I love the colours of the outfit)

sooooo, I'm kinda short - I'm also notorious for pants that mmmmm aren't really long enough. Some of us just can't seem to get it right.

@Arella Mae,
Re the off shoulder (one shoulder) dress, I think I saw that was an Alexander McQueen, quite the inventive fellow. (He died fairly recently and is highly mourned).

To restate my take on her clothes a little more smoothly, I am all for her sense of play with them, her often promoting by virtue of her choosing their designs some american designers, and love her choices of colors.

The bits I don't like - the high belts and the small cardigans - are worn by others too. Don't get me going on the recent fad for men's jackets that gather in horizontal waves with the effort to button a button - sort of like the small cardigans; also the flood pant look for men, which seems to have passed. (Thom Browne is the designer I'm thinking of for those). But these are biases on my part, to be differentiated from the point that I think she has at least somewhat sparked a fondness for american designers.

Because he's got a chip on his shoulder. He does want it all to be about him.

Yah, I have to cop. I was horrified by her hideous get-up at the Inaugural...and with very few exceptions, think she has horrible taste.

Not that this defines anything of real importance about her...but the thread is about her fashion sense...which I think is appalling.

There are some first ladies that dazzled with clothing choices....some that were so understated and simple that what they wore was never really an issue. The thing about Michelle's choices - to me - is they are too loud to go unnoticed...and then when you notice, they are, to me, quite unattractive. It's too bad - because she has the body and face that could make better choices stunning.

@Lash,
I didn't like that one either - the one shoulder band extravaganza. A grand example of why I never ever wear ruffles. They look funny on me. Well, hilarious if I wore them now, but even in my twenties - wrong. On the other hand, I liked her coat and dress ensemble that day.

@Lash,
The coat ensemble? I'll have to look it up. I'm remembering light gold with grey gloves.

Will see if memory works, back in a bit.

Of course, I happen to like snot green and effulgent mustard and shades of gray...

I'm not saying this is perfect - but it's pretty jolly.

Huh, number 2 doesn't show.
It's part of the slide show here, probably #8 -

@ossobuco,
She is much too young of a woman to be wearing something like that. I can see it on the Queen of England or Margaret Thatcher but not her. It is about the same color as that horrid pantsuit - dirty yellow. And those snot green gloves gotta go!

@Arella Mae,
So, you'd hate my mustard sweater.. I still love it.
This brings up greying of colors. I have a bias against pure colors, in that I think they are for graphics. I'm a painter, I like colors made from combinations of paints, or glazed layers. I think most people look better with greyed colors, much of the time, although I'll edge to that not being so in certain climates where people are not all pasty.

Among my favorite colors are grey-brown-greens.

Purely fashion-wise, I admire the imagination and risk-taking and panache, as opposed to quiet, blendy stuff. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I tend to really like her color combinations. I love, as osso says, the aspect of highlighting interesting American designers (Jason Wu et al).

@snood,
I absolutely agree. I think that the media is far too concerned with the clothes of famous women.

Saying that, I have found that Michelle Obama looks wonderful in some of her outfits, and horrible in others. There seems to be no in between. IMO, her inaugural black and red outfit was a monstrosity. Unlike Jackie Kennedy, who was a clothes horse par excellence, I don't think that Michelle has developed a consistent "style".

I suppose that it is more pleasant to haggle about fashion than about wars! Sad

@sozobe,
Random-ish selection of stuff I've liked:

http://mrs-o.org/storage/RTXVFRD.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1291610150252

http://mrs-o.org/storage/107174097.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1290906460442

I like the pop of color here, the highness of the belt doesn't bother me, seems to be the right place on her body.

http://mrs-o.org/storage/RTXUSR6.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1290119855915

Love the skirt and the boots.

http://mrs-o.org/storage/106956368.jpg?__SQUARESPACE_CACHEVERSION=1290121730070

Hard to look that good in athletic wear!

I like the full, interesting skirts with the fitted tops, obviously.

LOVE the purple shoes with this dress!

I agree with these 10 selections, the pics are big(GER) though so I won't post them here:

http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/woman/fashion/3362966/Michelle-Obamas-Top-10-dresses.html

Overall point -- I think that when she takes fashion risks, and is in the public eye pretty much every day, there are going to be some misses. But I approve of the risk-taking as a concept and I think there are also a lot of hits, and personally I like her style.

I like that last one a lot. Reminds me of something Jackie O would wear.

(Would have worn).
