@realjohnboy,
Since the independent voters can make a big difference in elections, I thought it appropriate to find out how they might vote for the republicans now talking about running.

As an Independent, I will not vote for Obama again, so I belong in the 54% disapproval group.

This doesn't really answer your question about Indy's, Tak, but I found it interesting. Gallup, which I picked because it is fresh (a few days ago), free and breaks the totals down into subsets, polled something like 1000 Adults asking them to indicate whether they Approve-Disapprove of Obama's job performance.

a) Overall (Approve 49%) (Disapprove 43%)

c) Independent (46% - 54%)

k) pure independent (34% - 66%)

I wonder what the difference is between an Independent (c) and a pure independent (k). There's a 12 pt swing in the ratings. There must be some criteria that differentiates the two groups.

@JPB,
I stumbled over Gallup's use of the word "pure," Jaye. Perhaps it doesn't matter as they will get "raptured" to heaven later today.
I also couldn't understand the logic behind (d) and (g), for example.

@realjohnboy,
Well, ideologically, e), f), and g) can span both parties and those not affiliated with a party. I think b), c), and d) asked about party affiliation and then (party aside) a political ideology.

The only thing I can think of that explains c) and k) is that some folks are members of a party but consider themselves pure independents - meaning that they're registered party members but don't vote according to party lines. dunno...

you can say that now, without knowing what your other option/s might be?

I don't think so, Cyclo. There could be a 3rd party conservative party candidate, but I doubt it. (paraphrasing our quotes).

I just read an AP story reporting that the mainstream Repub party (with their Rolodexes of donors) are searching hard for a candidate. Names mentioned are Mitch Daniels (who I don't think will run), Chris Christie (who says he is not interested, but ...) and Jeb Bush (who seems to be saying definitely not).
The Teaparty people are pissed at this public dissing.
I guess it is looking increasingly possible that the current crop of Teaparty candidates could agree on one of them to carry the flag.
But they, in my mind, can not wait until after the Republican convention. Rather, they would have to leave the GOP by about the end of the year.

@ehBeth,
Not really! I'd vote for any candidate that reflects my view the most, and no matter what, it won't be Obama.

@ehBeth,
Palin hasn't a prayer. However, I hope she does run to thin out the teaparty/GOP votes. It'll make for an interesting teaparty vs GOP election cycle; probably the last one.

ok - so, if she does run - and Obama is the other candidate - you have to vote for Palin based on your previous statements

interesting position to put yourself in

As you know, ehBeth, we have this electoral college thing. Whichever party gets the most votes gets all of the votes from that state. CA will go Dem, so there will be anti-Obama votes (like CI's) or votes for Donald Duck. Affecting nothing.
In my state of Virginia, however, it is a total tossup. We all, Dems, Repubs, Tea Party members are scrapping for every vote. No room to vote for D Duck.

@realjohnboy,
Are you quite sure about that winner take all thing? Some states yes; others I don't think so.

@ehBeth,
Yeah, I'll vote for Palin. In California and many other states - even republicans will not vote for Obama, she hasn't got a prayer nationally.

This country's already in hell; might as well blow it to smithereens. Nothing will save this country except an implosion. How bad can Palin be when we can't even trust the likes of GW Bush or Obama?

They'll all keep increasing the national debt. I know where that's going to lead this country. Do you?

Ah, the flush the toilet quickly rather than the slow trickle vote. Jeez, CI, we just survived the rapture and now you want a theocrat with her hand on the flusher?

Mitch Daniels appears to be out. In an email around midnight, he made the announcement.
