@Cycloptichorn,
You misunderstood.

I wasn't rebutting your joke, and actually I wan't rebutting anything.

I found the photo interesting and the blog you obtained it from silly, and so I tried to figure out what might explain it.

Rick Perry's image as a patriot hardly requires my defense. His coherence, but not his patriotism.

@Finn dAbuzz,
Odd that you would consider him such a patriot, given the fact that as recent as last year he was openly discussing the possible need to secede from the nation that he loves so much.

Or perhaps he was just being incoherent at the time?

Good evening. The debate tonight in Orlando (9 pm ET) will feature the usual gang plus Gary Johnson.
The pundits suggest (or hope) that Perry will go on the attack early to counter Romney's expected criticism of Perry's attacks on Social Security. That is a big issue in Florida with its large population of retirees.
Possible changes in Medicare will also be big.
I suspect that the candidates will all agree to support Israel strongly in its opposition to Palestine joining the U.N.
Immigration could be interesting. Many residents with immigrant backgrounds are quite conservative, as I understand it.
RomneyCare/ObamaCare may not show up as a big topic.
Perry and Romney will have to watch out for random grenades from Bachmann who is desperate to remain relevant.

@Cycloptichorn,
BTW

Here's what he actually said:

"There's a lot of different scenarios.We've got a great union. There's absolutely no reason to dissolve it. But if Washington continues to thumb their nose at the American people, you know, who knows what might come out of that. But Texas is a very unique place, and we're a pretty independent lot to boot."

As you can see there is a little problem with coherence, but it's a ridiculous stretch to suggest he was arguing in favor of succession.

This was a case of a media that wanted to believe a literal interpretation of Perry's Texas swagger and sass.

It's similar to his comment about treating Bernanke "real ugly."

Obviously it gives his NE critics fodder for exaggerated concern, but it's his style. It plays well in a lot of places, but it may not work on a national stage. He's going to be reluctant to dial it back though as I'm sure he would consider that backing down.

@realjohnboy,
Go, Gary!

I am still for Obama, despite all my whines - getting a bit closer to the short hairs - but I would like to see tea spilled, not only re partisan enthusiasm, but because I liked the long time republican party and can hardly believe how dumped on it has been lately, at all, and much less, by whom.

@ossobuco,
Well, he pretty much set a state record for vetoing bills. On the other hand, he also did exactly what he said he would, which is kind of a novelty. He was reelected, so someone besides myself must have liked his first term. For the rest of you, NM has a 2 term limit for governor.

First (and only) time I met him, I was working in a motel. He gave me a bumper sticker. My impression was "He certainly seems like a nice young man." I had to drive him to the airport in an unfamiliar motel van about 15 years newer than anything I had ever driven before. I think we covered 3 miles in low gear, and the wipers would flip across the windshield every fifteen seconds or so. I probably impressed him, too.

@ossobuco,
You liked the long time Republican Party that was a shade to the right of the Democrats...Rockefeller.

But when you liked the long time Republican Party you prefered the Democrats who were a shade to the left of the Republicans...JFK.

Times have changed and the consequences are more dire.

Neither Rockefeller nor JFK could get elected today

@Finn dAbuzz,
Read the reviews and saw a couple of clips.

Perry was pitiful. That's three in a row.

He's out of the running as far as I'm concerned. I hope my fellow conservatives agree, because if he gets the nomination we're in a lot of trouble.

I don't think he will though. His conservative credentials havn't been holding up and everyone but hardcore Perry fans has to feel their guts lurch in imagining him on a debate stage with Obama.

It's gonna suck for you guys to be saddled with Mitt; he's such a phony bastard, and everyone knows it.

Your line I quote above reminded me of a question I asked you several weeks ago:

Can you honestly say that you don't get a sinking feeling in your stomach, when you consider that he is the most likely person to win your party's nomination?

I guess we now have our answer.

@Finn dAbuzz,
And once again, the GOP audience really covers themselves with glory.

Booing an on-duty soldier in Iraq. Even if what they were booing was the premise of the question, it just came off terrible. I was following the National Review twitter feed for debate reactions, and they at least were shocked and stunned by the callousness of the audience at that moment... so I don't pretend it's all Conservatives who are tarred with the same brush; but what is it with these audiences?

This is a good example of why exchanges with you are so often equal parts tedious and annoying.

First of all, you are so enamoured of what you write that you can remember every post you have ever written...no matter how inane.

Secondly, you somehow think that the question you posed went to the core of Perry and predicted my current reaction, when you would have written virtually the same thing about any Republican front runner.

Finally, you've imagined a contest with this issue, with my post now declaring you the winner.

Enjoy the thrill of victory Cyclo.

Nah, I really can't. But this one did stick out, because I asked you about it again just a few weeks ago on this same thread.

I guess it's fair to say that I remember what a LOT of people write, though.

I never asked you that about Romney, because truthfully, he's a much better candidate than Perry. But you already knew that.

I don't know what the 'contest' you think I'm imagining is. But I can tell ya without a doubt that I know more about Perry than you do; and I actually remembered the last debate he was in before this cycle started up. None of this is coming as a surprise, if you've paid attention to Perry's career as a politician.

Am I happy that your party stubbornly refuses to nominate candidates for president that are smart and articulate? Yes, I am indeed. It doesn't bother me at all for your guts to be lurching at the thought of Obama trouncing Perry in debates.

There's still time for the Great White Hope to jump in.... Palin! Or maybe Christie. Now that would make me really happy.

@Finn dAbuzz,
In some shots he looks a bit like a waxworks version of Superman. Why don't the GOP nominate Bob Dylan. Mr Obama might have some trouble with him I should think. But he's not much of a compromiser according to the record.

They seem to me to be looking for somebody to fight the incumbent on the White House lawn. That's like wanting to play Manchester United at Old Trafford.

@spendius,
I think it's the rod that get's inserted up his ass just before he goes on stage.

Have you seen Dylan lately? He's less coherent than Perry.

The GOP is looking for someone who will beat Obama, whether that requires a MMA match or a ferocious game of checkers is secondary.

Be nice to him Finn. He finds it very dark indeed out in the political world right now. He's whistling as loud as be can, but it isn't doing much good..
