I agree.

I have an involuntary cringe every time I hear people talking about how his campaign success proves how "smart" he is.

A. The two worse, and most disliked, candidates ever to fill the bill.

Disliked, yes. Worst, no. Trump clearly has no qualifications to be President other than he is a natural born citizen and he is over 35, but Clinton is probably one of the most qualified candidates to run since G.H.W. Bush. Eight years in the Senate with a pretty solid record and respect from both sides of the aisle while there and four years as Secretary of State where she met and dealt with foreign leaders from around the world. That's a pretty solid resume even ignoring the work she during her husband's eight years in Arkansas and eight in the White House. That they are both disliked does not mean their qualifications are the same.

I think this is the key.

I don't think most people inside the US see how incredibly right-wing their media is. Even sources that some call left-wing are seen as right-wing from the outside.

Trump isn't saying anything terribly far outside the standard Republican line. It's cheap and easy for everyone to have his / their line reported as news instead of campaign advertising.

Okay, but part of my point is that they wouldn't do this for just anyone.

@snood,
The Koch brothers' gang said about a year ago that they didn't like any of the other candidates in the Republican race and were willing to let this round go to Trump while they worked on developing candidates for the future (ask georgeob what the rich, old, white guys are doing in the redwoods with the Koch boys this weekend).

Media that wants to stay on the right/correct side of the Koch organization would of course help Trump's momentum.

Nothing surprising* in that world has happened since the last meeting in the redwoods (if you follow that group).

That's all interesting. I just don't want the privilege afforded the rich, white and shameless male to go unmentioned.

In picking Mike Pence, Donald Trump may have just given Democrats a boost

Quote:
It came down to the wire, but Donald Trump picked Indiana Gov. Mike Pence (R) as his vice presidential running mate -- and may have just given Democrats an edge in one of the most competitive governors' races in the nation.

Pence had until noon to drop out of race because Indiana law doesn't let you run for two offices on one ballot. Trump was set to make his announcement 11 a.m. Friday, then postponed it in light of the terrorist attack in Nice, France, leaving Indiana Republicans in limbo. Pence could have been forced to make a tough decision between staying on the ballot and forfeiting the vice presidential nomination or betting on Trump and getting off the ballot.

At this hour, Indiana Sec/State office tells me Pence has not withdrawn his name from the GOV ballot. He has 2 hrs 13 mins left.

Donald Trump
I am pleased to announce that I have chosen Governor Mike Pence as my Vice Presidential running mate. News conference tomorrow at 11:00 A.M.

Now Indiana Republicans are scrambling to find a new candidate four months before Election Day. And their competition has a head start. Democratic nominee John Gregg has $5.8 million in the bank and almost beat Pence four years ago. Gregg has been on TV introducing himself to voters for the past 10 weeks, while Republicans don't even know who their candidate is.

Indiana GOP leaders will decide who will take Pence's spot. And their best shot to hold onto this seat is getting a big name that can quickly raise cash and doesn't need as much time to introduce himself or herself to voters.

The rest at the source. My sister lives in Indiana, good news for her.

Mike Pence -- Donald Trump’s pick for vice president -- is one of the most extreme right-wing officials in America. Let us count the ways:
1. As governor of Indiana he signed the “license to discriminate” bill allowing Indiana businesses to deny service to gays.
2. He has tried to halt the settlement of Syrian refugees in the state.
3. His position on abortion is so extreme that, as a member of congress, he voted for legislation that would give “personhood” rights to embryos, and defund Planned Parenthood.
4. He also voted against measures aimed at preventing LGBT discrimination, and he supported federal legislation prohibiting same-sex marriage.
5. He also threatened to block Hurricane Katrina reconstruction unless the money needed was offset by cuts to Medicare and the national school lunch program.

6. He has compared Obamacare to the 9/11 attacks (although later apologized for the comment).

7. Pence is also a favorite of the Koch brothers.
