@OmSigDAVID,
My family has a loose connection to donald rumsfeld's family. His daughter committed a real sin last Christmas when she regifted a present she received, sending it to another family member. The hurt she cause might not heal.

david wisely did not have children, although I suspect he was unable to sustain a relationship with a woman long enough to have a child.

@H2O MAN,
Your dead right h20, Europe bottled it and fair play to America for engaging. Engaging for a just against a legitimate enemy, same in Afghanistan ,No doubt the Taliban were aiding Al-Qaeda. But Iraq, that was all smoke and mirrors, if the coalition had done the job in the Gulf war, fair enough. But to go in on a false pretence and worse without a proper plan or strategy was criminal.

@eurocelticyankee,
The European approach to the most recent Balkan wars may have been the correct one - if the criterion is to minimize casualties in the war zone itself and fallout to outsiders in the form of refugees, costs of military intervention, humanitarian aid, etc. Leaving the parties alone to fight it out until one prevails decisively - as happened in the Rwandan genocide - places a time limit to the conflict.

The Afghanistan war is another classic example of this principle. Napoleon - who knew a thing or two about warfare - would send out messengers with the words
Quote:
“Go, sir, gallop, and don’t forget the world was made in six days. You can ask me for anything you like, except time.”

How could it have been the right approach, to stand there and watch all them men and boys being marched of, to be "cleansed". Or to watch Sariavo being bombed and sniped for years.

@eurocelticyankee,
Don't you see some inconsistency in simultaneously blaming the US for interfering in Iraqi affairs and not interfering in Iraqi affairs?!

Anyway Iraq is a closed chapter, militarily speaking. Afghanistan/Pakistan is a far more dangerous black hole for US and allied blood and treasure - in that it increasingly seems to be following the model of intervention having the opposite of the intended effects:
Quote:
......within any society there is a subgroup of people who are are actively radical, that is they practice extreme behavior. They assume there is another subgroup of passive supporters who accept but do not practice extreme behavior. And finally there is a third subgroup of neutral individuals who are susceptible to being converted into passive supporters.

A crucial question here is how to assign probabilities for switching from one group to another. One important process..... is the rate at which active radicals are removed from society by processes such as migration, deportation, arrest and death.....assume that some of these removals have a radicalizing effect on the susceptible group. For example, the arrest or murder of an active radical turns some neutrals into passive supporters.

When this happens a feedback loop is set up: the removal of active radicals generates more passive supporters from which more active radicals can be recruited and so on......Feedback loops are interesting because they lead to nonlinear behavior, where the ordinary intuitive rules of cause and effect no longer apply. So a small increase in one type of behavior can lead to a massive increase in another. In the language of physics, a phase transition occurs....

@farmerman,
"If Nothing else, the party of "No" will now have to stand up and be counted rather than just being an obstructionist party."

They've avoided any responsibility so far. I don't expect that to change.

As long as they server the upper 10% and keep the rest distracted, they are successful. Unfortunately, it works.

@eurocelticyankee,
Nobody said it's easy to stand by and watch carnage unfolding. The Canadian general commanding the UN military contingent in Rwanda went completely insane as a result of watching some 800,000 Tutsis getting slaughtered by Hutus and spent the next 20 years in an asylum.

@High Seas,
You only think that because you're ignorant of etiquette; please try to learn proper pronunciation of the name of the new Speaker:
Quote:
... Boehner first springs up in America's decennial census in 1860, where there are 29 Boehners, against zero for 1850. This gives rise to the obvious hypothesis that the first Boehners or Böhners came with a wave of other Germans to America after the repression of Germany's 1848 revolutions.....However, most Americans can't really get their mouths around German's umlauted vowels. A Brit might manage, by trying to pronounce "Berner", to come to grips with something like Boehner as it would be said in Germany. But Americans can't swallow those "r's" in quite the same way, and so would only manage an effort like "Burner".....

When did they become "Orange" ??

I evaluate each one on an INDIVIDUAL basis, e.g., I strongly disapprove of the incendiary attacks against Dresden,
but I support and endorse both nuclear attacks on Japan.

@Finn dAbuzz,
I always laugh when I hear people argue that the deficit can't be brought under control without increasing taxes.
-----------------------------------

You might laugh, but the Bush tax cuts are exactly what made our current deficits. You want to reign in spending? Start with Defense, 50% of the budget.

I laugh when I hear people say we can balance the budget if we just stop giving money away to poor people.

Despite the GOP rhetoric, no one spends like the GOP, just look at the Reagan years and Bush I and II.

This is true, Plain. That makes me happy.
Just as I rejected my father 's ideology; (he favored n voted for Roosevelt 4 times),
so also there coud just as easily be a counter-revolution against me,
even applying the proceed$ of my estate AGAINST my favorite principles.

That 's not bad enuf; I saw on 20/20 Friday nite
a brother and sister (looked like in their 20s or 30s)
who admitted to putting their natural father,
who treated them very well, into prison for 20 years,
FALSELY alleging that he had raped them in childhood.
For numerous YEARS, thay let him languish there,
as adults, knowing that he was 100% clean.

Occasionally, I hear of kids committing patricide
because of a tiff or a squabble, or for cash.
I 'm safe from THAT.
