Meanwhile in the world of ice cream I happened across an article today about chile ice cream

www.latimes.com/food/dailydish/la-dd-la-creamery-hatch-green-chile-ice-cream-20140822-story.html

"How cool are Hatch chiles? They're frozen in L.A. Creamery's new ice cream"

@tsarstepan,
Tried my first Jeni's ice cream at their popup store at the Gotham West Market.

A scoop of milk chocolate Bombay no. 9 and a scoop of vanilla bean. Nice!

@tsarstepan,
A friend sent me some Jeni's once, soooo good.

I use the Jeni's take (if it still is, corn starch instead of eggs), though I get my recipes from a sicilian gelato site.. corn starch or arrowroot. Not because I don't like eggs, but that I hate heating them and worrying that I'll get them too hot and have to start over. I don't like mixing cooking and worrying. Recipes? well, there are basic ones, and I fool around with ingredients.

I love Ronnybrook chocolate milk.

Always the first thing I go out for when I visit New York City.

I don't like milk but I love Ronnybrook!

@tsarstepan,
ohhh I don't enter Whole Paycheque

I always went to their stall at Chelsea Market or their stand at the Union Square green market since that's walking distance from http://sihnyc.org/ - now it looks like Duane Reade is the closest location to the sihnyc

love Chelsea Market - so many good food options

@ehBeth,
If you buy their generic brands, Whole Foods can be quite inexpensive.

@ehBeth,
WF is a problem because they import some cheeses no one else does but just as I don't shop at WalMart I have stopped shopping at Whole Foods. I also can avoid Starbucks because there are independent coffee roasters and coffee/bakeries and coffee/lunch shops where I live.

a cautionary note...

Quote:
Blue Bell recalls all its ice cream products over Listeria concerns

After weeks of gradual recalls, Blue Bell Creameries is now pulling all of its products off the shelves.

The company is recalling its entire line of ice cream, frozen yogurt, sherbet and other frozen snacks
because they could be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, the company said Monday.

"Today's decision was the result of findings from an enhanced sampling program initiated by Blue Bell
which revealed that Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream half gallons produced on March 17, 2015,
and March 27, 2015, contained the bacteria," the company said in a statement.

"This means Blue Bell has now had several positive tests for Listeria in different places and plants."

So far, Blue Bell has documented five cases of Listeria in Kansas and three cases in Texas.

@ossobuco,
replying to self, since I gave the recipe site link on that post -

I'm making my first gelato of this year. So far I've got the base cooling in the refrigerator after adding most of the ingredients and cooking until the base was thickened. It's at this point a simple unsweetened cocoa powder/vanilla based concoction waiting to be twirled in the cold-from-the-freezer
ice cream maker.

But, I have things to add at the ready.. that is, when the gelato is almost gelato, as in thick:
chopped almonds
soaked golden raisins
maybe some banana bits?

maybe all of those?

opinions?
