You can say that again. Too many hands, in too many pockets.
I might say, not 'purely' capitalist society, rather than 'truly', Phoenix. Nobody I know loves my work more than I do, but at the end of the day, it's the money in my hand that allows me to continue doing the good work I do.
Out of fairness to the writer of this thread, could we please move this discussion to my new thread? I think that we are getting off the track here!
Believe me.
You wouldn't want to live in a purely capatislistic society.
Perhaps this would warrant a new thread as well.
That thread seems to have already been started by Phoenix! I missed the link. Scroll up there ebrown...I gotta run, will pop in later.
I realize the success that America has had in making racism a taboo phenomenon. Thus, most people are trying to prevent self-degradation and ostracizing from others. Consequently, most people are cognitively attempting to not see themselves or be seen by others as being racist, because it is damaging to their self worth and being. When it cannot be denied, then attempts are made to normalize their affliction by suggesting that everyone is racist or prejudice, thus reducing the stain on themselves in relative terms if not absolute terms.
Often times, one has to use deductive reasoning methodology to get past the cognitive efforts of individuals who are attempting to hide or mask revealing racist rationalizations. Take for example the rich and poor instead of black and white. Ask why here in America, that some people are well off while others are not and you will get a different answer than if you asked that same question about blacks and whites. Thus, many whites will lament that everyone has equal opportunity in America or that the playing field is even between races or ethnicities. Consequently, they conclude that people are poor or poorer because of lack of effort relative to others. But given the fact that blacks are disproportionately poor, relative to whites, then the inferences is that blacks are disproportionately lazy, relative to whites. If one gives that A = B and then gives that B = C, then it logically follows that A = C. Many whites do not say outright that A = C and thus they think this prevents them from being racist or appearing racist. Yet, the logical implication is indeed racist.
In light of this, I do believe that Bill has been the only intellectually honest person thus far. He represents the rationalizing of racism that I am referring to. Racism has always been rooted in economics.
"Racism has always been rooted in economics."
On that point, Noah, I completely agree.
Noah,
Do you consider yourself a racist?
Do you consider yourself intellectually honest?
The flaw in your logic is this (I think this is the B=C part (not that that is important but I work with mathematics)...
No one has made the inference that blacks are poor because they are lazy (disproportinally or otherwise).
I would say this means that B does not equal C and therefore A does not equal C.
But please answer my previous question.
Do you consider yourself a racist?
Whenever I read one of these they did it to us postulations, I feel the need to point out that many people have worked together to create a world never seen before.
Rosa Parks would still be at the back of the bus if it weren't for a lot of white people. Slavery would still be in practice if white people hadn't worked side by side to eradicate its practice.
The media, government, educational institutions were dominated by the white male for so long. Women and minorities fought for the chance, the ability, the future and couldn't have done so without capitulation and community of powerful white people. No victory is won alone.
There are many disparities in n.america but I don't think anyone can or should blame white people. Most people cause their own miseries and then play the victim card. Misery is not an istitution. White people have advanced the cause of human rights, law, education, medication and industry. They haven't done it alone, some times it has been perpetrated on the backs of the disadvantaged, and sometimes done inspite of themselves BUT...
There will always be more shades of people in the wings to fight these injustices.
We all belong to the HUMAN RACE.
Quote:We all belong to the HUMAN RACE.
Amen to that.
Racism exists because we make a distinction between masses and individual. A strong sense of individualism will overcome the curse that is the masses. Even if racism still exists (and i know it still does, since my family is abit racist themselves), man has the ability to overcome it. It is best to just ignore it and just plod forward, leaving these kind of people in the dust, instead of whining about it. Only when it is excessive and it threatens your existence or way of life needs it be adressed.

That's all nonsense. You couldln't possibly know what most white people think and feel.
I for one could care less if what color you are. You could be green, purple, or blue and I wouldn't treat you any differently as I treat anyone else.
Welcome to A2K where we have a huge variety of people in all colors, shapes and sizes. It's a very nice community, so look around and see for yourself.
If I saw someone green, blue, or purple I'd probably make fun of them.
I'd call them Grimace, and it would be awesome.
Heh heh, Grimace...good one...
Racism is alive and well where I live. Most people I know are predjudiced, but follow the law pretty much to keep out of trouble. I usually find myself alone when I go that extra mile for racial harmony.
Most people don't consider themselves a racist, but when you ask them a question like "Would you approve of your son or daughter dating a black man or women?" or "Would you prefer a white of black doctor to operate on you?" or for the sports fans "Would you prefer a white or black manager to lead your team?"
Even the ones that don't consider themselves a racist lean towards the white side.
I am with Celli,
I would certainly approve of my children dating black men or women (or white). In fact, my children themselves are not white. My wife is Mexican.
I have been under the care of a non-white doctor and have no problem of this ... and sports coaches pshaw.
Child, you may lean towards the "white side". But I don't. The color of your skin does not make you racist. It is attitudes, words and actions that makes one racist.
As Dr. King Said....
"I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."
Amen.

Who said anything about me leaning towards the white side?!??! I know I didn't. I was just saying that the majority of the white people I know would not approve of interracial dating, black doctors, and black coaches.
And as much as they may disagree with it, this way of thinking makes them a racist, but of course I live in Mississippi.
The majority of white people I know do approve of interracial dating, black doctors and black coaches.
My family (i.e. the family I grew up with) is interracial. My family (i.e. the family I formed when I married) is also interracial. I have never had a problem with this. We have many white friends and black friends as well as latinos and asians. No one has ever said anything.
Maybe you just need new friends. Perhaps things are different up here in the northeast. I like to think that people are decent wherever you go.
Yes, racism is still a problem in our society. We should be aware of this as a society and do things to address this.
But saying "white people are racist" doesn't help.
My solution is to live my life without regard to race and to accept people for who they are individually. I expect people to treat me and my family the same way.
