This is part of a continuing blow by reality to my somewhat naive (but not entirely) take that sports can channel, ah, hostility. Remember, I'm goofy about piazzas, squares, and so on re their history. The history of the years of the campo in Siena, very interesting, I've good links if anyone is interested. I went to a town in northern italy to check out the piazzas where the orange hurling happens, Ivrea. At one point I had it in my mind that the crips and the bloods, risen together in Los Angeles, could have worked all the gang drama out in oranges, given the groves there back in the day, and, say, forget guns. Naive, sure. But to some extent that pattern works over time.
With that background and point of view, I hate to see what I think of as morphing, the fan to the hooligan or some other word, though that is common. Messing up the game, hey, evil.
