Diagram a sentence?

(For me it was 7th grade. Mo is learning it from his tutor in preparation for 4th grade.)

Memorize the multiplication table?

(For me it was 2nd grade. I don't think they're going to require Mo to do it because math isn't taught that way these days, it seems.)

Learn to write in cursive?

(2nd grade again for me. Mo hasn't started this yet (going into 4th grade.)

Do dissection(s)?

(For me it was 8th grade. Mo did several/watched a few more dissections in 3rd grade.)

What age did you graduate from high school?

I'm just curious.

Thanks!

@boomerang,
I'm thinking fifth, but for sure in sixth.

cursive, probably late second

dissection? junior in high school in bio class. Later seriously in comparative anatomy/uni
Er, I studied embryology before that.
edit, my first yr in college was at a small school, where I took zoology 1A, very similar to high school

Seventeen, not eighteen until the end of october.

Memorize the multiplication table? 4th grade...SonofEva started in 3rd grade, but it wasn't presented as a table, just facts. We used flash cards.

Learn to write in cursive? 3rd grade...same for SonofEva.

(2nd grade again for me. Mo hasn't started this yet (going into 4th grade.)

Do dissection(s)? 9th grade biology...SonofEva did a few in elementary school.

(For me it was 8th grade. Mo did several/watched a few more dissections in 3rd grade.)

What age did you graduate from high school? 17.5, but I was among the youngest in my class. Most were 18. SonofEva will be 18.

I'm just curious.

Thanks!

I remember this being foisted on me in early middle school school. I also remember feeling it was useless. And I was right, I have never needed this skill. They do this in ESL classes (I help with) I still find it useless. I learned Spanish as a second language as an adult... I never diagrammed a sentence in Spanish and would feel quite annoyed if I had to go through such a pointless exercise.

Memorize the multiplication table?

Never. I graduated with a Physics degree (with a 3.9 GPA). I work in a high tech career. I never needed to memorize a multiplication table. This is a useless thing to foist on children. Math is a way to understand and think about problems. Memorization is the best way to ruin the creativity and discovery that are essential to mathematical thinking.

(For me it was 2nd grade. I don't think they're going to require Mo to do it because math isn't taught that way these days, it seems.)

Learn to write in cursive?

I spent a 3rd grade in a fundamentalist Baptist school. I was paddled into writing cursive. Thank goodness my parents realized how bad this experience was and pulled me out.

(2nd grade again for me. Mo hasn't started this yet (going into 4th grade.)

Do dissection(s)?

Tenth grade in school. I was in a camp that did dissection earlier.

(For me it was 8th grade. Mo did several/watched a few more dissections in 3rd grade.)

What age did you graduate from high school?

18

I'm just curious.

Thanks!

@Eva,
Re - dissecting before I got there in comp anat - maybe many in my class had done all that before - remember I was from a petunia school, not to mention one of three, uh, girls.

I did ok, I liked anatomy.

@boomerang,
Well seeing how you're now Australian courtesy of the Snake thread I guess you'll want to know how it worked in the antipodes.

Diagram a sentence?
Never heard that terminology - but if you're talking about breaking up a sentence into subjects and predicates et al - then 5th

Memorize the multiplication table?
Pretty sure this was 3rd and 4th - how grateful I am in retrospect.

Learn to write in cursive?
Started in 3rd, but I still haven't got it write (intended)

Do dissection(s)?
7th

What age did you graduate from high school?
17

What age did you graduate from high school?
20 Embarrassed (I could have done it with 18, though)

Not to harp on but I looked up 'Diagram a sentence' and found http://homeworktips.about.com/od/englishhomework/ss/diagram.htm

It's pretty funny that a pedagogy that looks at the components of a sentence uses a noun as a verb. Not sure how to interface that one.

You've got that right, Brown.

People who do this to ESLs are not teachers. They are drifters, there to rake in money for doing nothing.

Any noun can be verbed.

Cool... you made a verb into a noun back into a verb. I think that there is what is known as reverberation.

@boomerang,
Diagram a sentence: Seventh grade. But that was just an hour of the teacher talking about it. He may have assigned one homework on it, but there was never a test.
Memorize the multiplication table: Second grade.
Learn to write in cursive: Never.
Do dissections: You mean on an animal? I think we dissected a fish in seventh grade.
Graduate from high school: At 19. (German gymnasiums, my branch of the high school system, run for 13 grades rather than 12. Many of them still do.)
