We shouldn´t forget that Portugal is probably one of the poorest countries in the European Union.

Owen 2, Rooney 1, Gerrard 1, Ronaldo 1.

England 4-1.

Come on, you Super Whites!

Oh I forgot, I'm not English.

LISBON, June 24 (Reuters) - Lisbon and regional bus drivers will strike before the Portugal-England quarter-final at Euro 2004 on Thursday, a union leader said.

However, the city bus company Carris said it would lay on alternative buses to Lisbon's Luz stadium for the game which starts at 7:45 p.m. (1845 GMT).

Nearly all Carris's 3,000 bus drivers and other workers were planning to strike between 3 p.m. (1400 GMT) and 10 p.m. (2100 GMT), said Fernando Fidalgo, director general of the bus workers' union

It was based this.

But okay, maybe also in the game. :-)

And that on the anniversary of the battle of Bannockburn.

"Try, try, try again" as Robert the Bruce already had said Laughing

The Royal Military Police - as an aside - has doubled its forces in neaby Paderborn, and soldiers are only allowed to leave the barracks with an office (as nanny) after the matches: refuse bins were set to fire, house doors smashed, cars damashed and more vandalised by drunken soldiers after the last match(es).
----------------------------------------------------

Well, nice match going on - this team in the German jersey isn't playing bad at all :wink:

One of the best matches in a World and/or European Championship within the last couple of years!

A fair result - althought, if Rooney hadn't have to leave the grounds ....

Well, I was wrong- they weren't super whites tonight. They played like haddies, and Portugal were far superior.

So, a fair result, even though it went to penalties in the end.

Oh Becks, we diehard English football foes thank you once more!

Hope you'll get more commercial endorsements.

Hope the tabloids and mercadologists spoil Rooney too.

Portugal has this victory hard-earned. And Beckham... ha... he can´t score a penalty.
So Portugal plays vs. the winner of Netherlands-Sweden.

Today: Greece-France

Will be also a nice game...

Well I'm feeling particulary jolly this morning. What shows character is not how you celebrate victory, but how you deal with defeat. [which probably explains why English people riot nowadays, that great English imperialist Kipling not being exactly PC]

If

by Rudyard Kipling

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same
;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

nah, you weren't. It's tough to lose the game this way (and if it was Croatia I am sure 99% of my compatriots would yell "We are robbed" too), but Terry commited foul. He did what is not allowed and fact that goal would be scored quite probably even without his "tackle" only means that he did stupid thing, not that ref was wrong. He put his arm around goalkeepers neck or over his shoulder, doesn't matter. You are not allowed to do that. Pretty simple thing.

I am, however, sorry that this game was quarter final game because I am sure some worse teams will enter semifinal - worse then both Portugal and England. But, that's how it always goes....

I am also surprised that England haven't used their own victory to learn something. Although we played bad against England, we also showed pretty obviusly how you end when you score early goal and then all you do is defend that lead.
Shots on goal statistic is something like 35-15 for Portugal - you can't win that way.

And, at the end, funniest thing is that worst players on the pitch were Figo and Beckham (Figo is terrible, absolute disaster, and Beckham was...well, better then Figo but nothing else). It's time for new stars to be promoted I believe.

Today: France-Greece. Although I would like Greece to surprise I doubt that it's possible. After all, despite all the fuss they actually played only one really good game - against Portugal. They lost with already eliminated Russia and were completely outclassed by Spain.

I think France will win. Greece is a surprise, for sure, but come on: we are talking about France. But eventually we don't know. I recall a certain South Korea, WC 2002.
