RIP, Tug.

Quote:
Tug McGraw, the zany relief pitcher who coined the phrase "You Gotta Believe" with the New York Mets and later closed out the Philadelphia Phillies' only World Series championship, died Monday. He was 59.

McGraw died of brain cancer at the home of his son, country music star Tim McGraw, outside of Nashville, Phillies spokesman Larry Shenk said. He had been battling the disease since March when he underwent surgery for a malignant tumor.

McGraw's illness came as a shock last spring. He was at Phillies' training camp in Clearwater, Fla., as a special instructor, looking fine and acting as funny as ever, but was suddenly hospitalized on March 12.

"We lost a part of Mets history tonight," Mets owner Fred Wilpon said. "Tug was a battler on and off the field. I know he fought the disease with every ounce of energy he had. We'll all miss him dearly."

Wow, this is gonna be a lot at once:

Molly and Eck are in the Hall;

Juan's Gone to KC;

Danys Baez will close in Tampa and Braden Looper will do the same in Shea;

and the Padres and Mariners have traded six players,getting 3B Jeff Cirillo and pitcher Brian Sweeney, while Seattle will get pitcher Kevin Jarvis, catcher Wiki Gonzalez, utility infielder Dave Hansen, and a minor league player to be named later.

*whew* now I know how those tickers feel.

Looks like Jimmy Rice is forever not a HOF'r.

I didn't think he would/deserved it anyway.

Big news for sure! Thanks, PDiddie, for the wrap-up. I know that Mariners fans will be thrilled about unloading Cirillo, who earlier vetoed another trade.

Re Rose: I read today that his book addresses the gambling issue more or less like this: Yes, I did it, but I never bet against my own team. Sorry that fans are upset about this, but now it's time to move on.

Sounds to me as though he's cutting a few corners here, including the issue of why he lied about it so long. And the contrition that Selig seems to be demadning is not yet in evidence.

But the fans, I'm sure, want Rose in the Hall, and that may have more of an impact on what happens. We shall see.

Vlad's an Angel.

And Raffy's going back to the Birds. That's a decent offseason for them: Palmeiro, Miguel Tejada, Javy Lopez.

And Zim is gonna work with Lou in Tampa.

I love that crazy old guy.

Clemens is pitching for the Astros? That is so cool. I love how Steinbrenner's little world is unraveling. Three of his top pitchers gone, Zimmer disses him all the time. Next year should be fun, though I wish I were more optimistic about the Braves...

what? the braves should let someone else win the division for a change!

the astros have now added to their '04 pitching staff: clemens, pettitte, kenny rogers, and jeff nelson. not too shabby...

True re the division, Region, but I'm a fan.

I just thought of something else that's cool about Roger pitching for the Astros: Now he'll have to bat as part of his regular routine. Might make him a little more shy about throwing at batters...

no doubt he'll feel some payback when he hits...
kenny rogers & jeff nelson went to the texas rangers, not the astros.

Something tells me those additions still won't make the Rangers competitive. Interesting, isn't it, that Nelson and Garcia, the two accused villains in the bullpen incident vs. Boston, are both gone from NY!

Woo Hoo!

The Astros have signed utility infielder John Valentin to a minor-league contract and invited him to spring training.

There's supposed to be more Astro-news later today...

...some pitcher, reportedly... :wink:

Clemens Inks $5M Deal With Astros

POSTED: 12:03 p.m. EST January 12, 2004
UPDATED: 1:52 p.m. EST January 12, 2004

HOUSTON -- Roger Clemens has agreed to pitch for the Houston Astros, reports The Associated Press.

KRIV-TV in Houston reports the Astros will pay the six-time Cy Young Award winner about $5 million to pitch for his hometown team. ESPN.com reports the deal is for one year.

Clemens announced his retirement at the end of last season after going 17-9 with a 3.91 ERA in 211 innings with the New York Yankees.

He had second thoughts when Yankees teammate, friend and fellow Houston-area resident Andy Pettitte signed with the Astros last month.

Wow, I can root for Roger again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Roger wanted to play with Ryan in Houston back at the beginning of his career but it never happened. Now, he gets to be with Andy - otherwise, IMHO, this would have never happened..........
