Why didn't he "fess up?"

Just a guess, but I'd think it's not very easy to just come out and admit steroid use if you're a pro athlete.

giambi, testifying under oath, had to fess up, lest he be hit with a perjury charge.

bonds has yet to take the stand...

I thought the Bonds did testify and that he admitted unknowingly taking steroid cream? Of course there is widespread cynicism that Bonds would never ingest something he didn't know all about...

Looks like NYY has signed Tony Womack and Jared Wright. It galls me to see it, but here we go again. Throw money to fill the needs and see what happens...

I hate to say it, but NYY is playing it smarter than in the recent past. They're throwing money at young pitchers, rather than has-beens. Though, from what I read, Steinbrenner had his heart set on signing Randy Johnson; they just couldn't make the deal. At least not so far...

From SI's Steve Canella:

"Good news: I checked all of the usual Web sites first thing this morning, and it appears we'll make it through the week without another steroids outing. (How hard must it have been yesterday for the newest Dodger, Jeff Kent, to keep from gloating over the mess his old buddy Barry Bonds finds himself in?)

One thing that got lost in the furor: Bonds and Jason Giambi, cheats though they are, got royally screwed. Their grand jury testimony never should have been made public. While it's good for the game in the long run that this story broke, it shouldn't have come to light the way it did. It's tough to blame players when they say they don't trust that a stringent testing system will keep the sport clean and protect their privacy. ..."

I'm a little confused about the privacy issue: If it's illegal to use steroids, why shouldn't it be known who's using them? I agree that leaking the grand jury testimony wasn't the right way to do it, but if that hadn't happened, there'd be no momentum toward getting a real policy in place.

Jeez. Just in today's NY Times, a writer said that the Mets thought Pedro was using them to extract more from the Red Sox. I guess not...
