Will the Mets's signing Pedro for all that $$$ be seen as a brilliant coup or a tremendous waste of money? Only time will tell....

The spectre of Mo Vaughn looms large at times like this!

The Mets overpaid for him. Even though he's still a very good pitcher, his numbers have declined so much over the past few years, and then there's the question of whether he can stay healthy.

I'm not running the guy out of town, he had an amazing run in Boston.

Agreed, Slappy. I heard the deal explained on ESPN last night. He was offered $$ several times and kept asking for more. Now he has it. But he'd better earn it or the NY media will have the long knives out. Same goes for Minaya, the Mets' new GM.

Minaya, in my opinion already cut his own throat. The Mets with their feelings of insecurity in the Big Apple felt they had to do something. Overpaying for another Vaughn just ain't gonna cut it.

at the very least, mets vs yanks will be compelling again, something it hasn't been for 3 years...

I'm very happy, Region! The only fly in the ointment right now is that apart from Andruw Jones, the Braves don't have any outfielders. Andruw cover a lot of ground, but still...I hadn't realized that J.D. Drew is out the door, but I gather they've given up on trying to sign him.

drew's in his prime, and he just had a great year -- they'd be insane not to re-sign him...

ya think the braves'll go after sosa?

Re Sosa: I sure hope not! The thing is, the Cubs owe him a ton of $$$. No way any team will take him unless the Cubs pay the bulk of his salary. Well, come to think of it, maybe the Mets would do it.

I'm really unhappy about losing Drew, but the Braves GM can't spend more than he did last season. With Boras as Drew's agent, it's a lost cause...

The Pedro era at Shea will be interesting to observe. Now that Piazza's aura has faded, the Mets have lacked a big star. And Pedro is all that--and more!

randolph gets to drive for the first time, and pedro's setting up shop next door to 'papi'.
am expecting a winning season and a fight for the wildcard this year.

I was reading about the Mets and Yankees in the NY Times this morning, and I had the feeling I was spending another evening with a married couple I know who are always at each other's throats. Same old, same old.

But then I read that both teams try to stay in the news all winter to build enthusiasm and sell season tickets. So I guess it makes sense.

Let the oneupmanship continue!
