I don't think it's the least bit nutty to suggest that the question was planted. It's a bit tough to believe it originated, unaided, in the mind of a second grader.

It's not nutty either to suggest that it might have been planted by the propoganda arm of the White House. This is just the sort of thing these functionaries do. All Administrations have them. This one's is just a bit more creative than their predecessors.

I think it's the opposite. This question is clearly an embarrasment for the Obama administration. Obama's team deported far more in 2009 than Bush ever did in one year. Why would Obama want to point that out in front of the Mexican first lady?

I agree. It is a high risk but what they hope to gain is your sympathy. They aren't standing behind a shield of what's right or what's just or fair or legal. They ask that you feel sorry for them.

The demographics of the area surrounding NHE are quite different then that of the
school. According to the 2000 US Census Bureau, the total population within the boundaries of
the 20903 zip code, which is represented in
Figure 3, is 22,679. From this population,
30.5% are White, 32.1% are Black or African
American, 13.2% are Asian, and 17.9% are of
another race. From all of these races, 34.2% of
the population is Hispanic or Latino. The
average family size of this area is 3.53 persons.
One important characteristic to note about this
population is that 49.5% of the people of this area
are foreign born and 57.9% speak a language other than English at home. Also, 9.5% of families
are below the poverty line. The school is taking appropriate steps toward including all families
through the employment of a full time parent and community coordinator who is fluent in
Spanish. Also, it is likely that the seven ESOL teachers at NHE are very beneficial in this unique
situation.

What we have is aschool that is very unrepressentative of the norm.
