Karla Vanessa Perez of the northeastern Mexican state of Coahuila is pregnant. The reason why the Mexican woman is making headlines is that she's not pregnant with one, two or even three babies. Perez is pregnant with nine babies, six girls and three boys.
Perez is currently being treated at a hospital in Saltillo, reports Reuters. The multiple pregnancy stemmed from fertility treatments that the expectant mother received.
Besides nine babies being an alarming number to care for, the Daily Mail reports that Perez already has triplets. The future mom of 12, is reportedly due on May 20.
"It's very early to think of names for the babies," Perez had told Notimex. "First I hope that everything goes well."
The shocking pregnancy comes during National Infertility Awareness Week (NIAW). NIAW began in 1989, and works to raise awareness about the disease of infertility and encourage the public to understand their reproductive health.
If Perez' delivery of nonuplets goes well, the Daily Mail reports that it would be "one of the highest multiple births ever recorded."
In January 2009, Nadya Suleman gave birth to eight babies, two daughters and six sons. Suleman got pregnant through in vitro fertilization. Her octuplets were only the second full set of babies to be born alive in the U.S.
In August 2009 a Tunisian woman claimed to be having a record breaking 12 babies. She was later exposed as a fraud, and an investigation revealed that the woman had "psychological problems and is unlikely even to be pregnant," reported the UK Telegraph.
