Sure, but the idea is that one believes in or hopes for a god in that kind of situation.

@InfraBlue,
Thank you Captain Obvious . . . i've been in that situation, rational thought plays little part in one's reaction.

I have heard a number of people exclaim "Oh God, oh God, oh God" !!! and it never entered my head that they were praying, or even religiously inclined, at the time.

They often hunkered down though.

Yes osso. I find him a bit endearing myself. I have a soft spot for maiden auntie types. The innocence of not knowing what's going on is quite touching I always think.

It's not even a possibility actually. It's different in movies of course.

Catholic footballers making a cross while looking at the sky, don't make em religious either... same goes for muslems pointing their arsehole up at the sky.

@tenderfoot,
The footballer one always gets me. Thanks God for helping me score a goal, pity about all those kids starving in Africa. It always feels self-centred and disrespectful of God - then again I can also understand that if you believe in God there is sense in outwardly/inwardly acknowledging through a physical activity (like kneeling to the west or whatever).

Why is it "cool". Writing a sign saying "ATHEISTS IN FOX HOLES" is not atheists in fox holes.

Where was the photo taken? Are the people in it "male models"?

Have either of you ever been in a fox-hole.

I hope you are not armchair fox-holing again.

It's cool to me because I experienced a sense that it was when I saw that image. You're demanding empirical evidence that it's true? Wink

@Setanta,
Given the simplism of your response, your comprehension of the assertion was anything but obvious.

You're welcome.

Just to be clear, dubious winks notwithstanding, I was merely pointing out that such pictures prove nothing.

Even Voltaire felt constrained to take out insurance at the last.

According to reports, although they also might have been got up the serve a purpose.

What is so "uncool" is the insult to our intelligence. Our stupidity is taken for granted by those who produce and promote such a picture.

What does an atheist have against having your dick out for a picture like that? It would seem artistically appropriate I should think. And would have gained more publicity for the cause.

@spendius,
You've got a handful of soldiers in a war holding up a sign saying they're atheists. This is empirical evidence that there are "atheists in foxholes." Case closed. Meme defeated.

Empirical evidence. It works. Lack of it? Not so much.

Thanks.

@FBM,
A handful of soldiers holding up a sign saying "atheists in foxholes" isn't empirical evidence. It's an assertion they are making.

What could they do to make it seem empirical for you?

@reasoning logic,
Being in a fox-hole with shells exploding all around them and machine gun fire keeping them where they are. In which case they would not be worrying about atheists in fox-holes or being so elegantly posed.

That would satisfy me as long as the photographer doesn't mind.

Seemed pretty straight forward to me, RL. They were saying they've been in foxholes...and they are atheists.

Some people are just too sophisticated and intelligent to be convinced.
