Make sure it never gets to be a significant minority. It's safer to be in an insignificant one which is one nobody takes seriously. Nobody that matters I mean. "Oppressed" is a relative term like victim syndrome.

Protected by insignificance and being able to get your frustrations off your chest is a good deal. As long as it remains insignificant.

I'd wager money that it is less than 50%. And I'd have won my bet. It's less than 30% if you include agnostics and people who follow no religion. It's around 0.2% atheist. Atheists in jail are a smaller percentage than they are in the society they come from. So... we're actually less likely to commit crimes (or at least be caught).

What are the stats for people who go to church regularly?

Why are you asking me when you have the same access to the internet as I do?

Interesting statistics, Kay . . . i'm glad you looked them up. Had anyone asked me prior to that, i'd simply have surmised that incarcerated atheists were the same proportion of the prison population as atheists in general are in the population at large.

that's why you never catch priests abusing children.

And supposing you don't catch anymore from now on. Where would you be then?

There are 600,000 priests and they will all be under scrutiny. It's the wrong job now for somebody who is looking to abuse kids and knows how to infiltrate himself into getting them under his tutelage.

The argument is value free.

@Setanta,
Incarcerated felons attend religious services quite often, as in every chance hey get, because that gets them out of the cell-block for a respite.

I'm asking you because you used stats which had nebulous terms in them as Io has pointed out.

People who go to church regularly are measureable.

@spendius,
And as I pointed out the gap between atheists and people who don't go to church is huge. And, frankly, completely besides the point. Atheists are NOT people who just don't go to church.

@eurocelticyankee,
So to question somebody you agree with is now irritating them is it? How nice for you. Why are you not president of big boss? You can say anything you like and anybody who questions it is irritating. Babies are like that. And fascist dictators.

@Setanta,
I would have thought so too. However the more educated you are the more likely you are to be an atheist and the prison population tends to be less educated than the general population.

Whether either of those relationships is causal or correlation I don't know and don't care to speculate.

@hingehead,
One page I linked to (maybe one I just looked at?) broke down atheists by education as well - all groups were represented in low percentages.

And I explained why those stats are suspect. You cant believe everything you read. Do you find fault with my explanations as to why those statistics are faulty ?

yes I do truly believe that mostly religious people are perpetrating crimes
It is called vilifying the opposition.

Dont think of them as non-practicing Theists, think of them as non-practicing Atheists who are pretending to be religious to further themselves.
