Who doesn't like to eat?

Reply Tue 5 Jan, 2010 09:24 am
I know a lot of people that deprive themselves from eating foods that they love due to the high calorie intake. I also know a lot of people that can eat anything anytime of the day and they still look like if they ate a small meal. They look good even though they eat a lot! Do you all deprive yourselves from eating certain foods? Also, how is it that some people can eat whatever they want and don't gain weight, still look good, what's their secret? Do you know any people that are like that? If so, do you envy them?

@detroittou,
Envy of anything is a complete waste of time, and does nothing but make a person unhappy.

Why envy someone for one aspect of their lives, when we wouldn't be willing to accept all the challenges they have?

I eat whatever I wanna eat,
ideally, in good places (and plenty of it).

I don't care all that much about eating.

I will eat when I am hungry, and there are foods I like. But I am pretty much as happy with rice and beans as I am with so-called "gourmet" food.

As long as I am not hungry, there are lots of things I would rather do than eat.

@detroittou,
I agree with Chai re: envy but I think this observation is useful in the other direction -- that if you see a thin person and a not-thin person, you can't make assumptions about how those people eat.

I know people like that, it's genetic. My husband and his whole family can (and do) eat vast quantities of food and not lift a finger, exercise-wise, and stay thin. My husband used to think everyone was like that to at least some extent, and if anyone is fat it's just their own fault for eating too much crappy food. Living with me for 17 years has changed his mind. (I am not fat but have to work out four times a week, strenuously, to avoid it. If I eat reasonably and exercise moderately the pounds still accrue. He eats the same breakfasts and dinners that I do [and larger portions] plus goes out for lunch most days while I have healthier home-made food for lunch, and he sits behind a desk all day while I am out and about doing things -- yet when regular, strenuous exercise is removed from the equation, he stays thin and I don't.)

I hate eating.

I started a thread a while back where I am looking for a perfect food or food blend. I'm still looking.

@maporsche,
Eating is good! Food is what gives us energy to function throughout the day. I have never heard people say that they don't like to eat, unless they are anorexic. As for me, food is excellent!

@sozobe,
soz,I am by no means arguing with you just stating my confusion; it seems to me that weight gain is entirely a matter of calorie intake in excess of calories burned with some exceptions.

@dyslexia,
Right... but people have different metabolisms. There is a genetic predisposition there. (One person can burn significantly more calories than another while doing much less to burn those calories.)

@detroittou,
I don't like to eat. It provides little to no enjoyment.

However, I do understand the biological need to eat food. I do eat food. My BMI is hovering near 25. I am not anorexic. I encourage you to read the thread I linked to for further details.

@maporsche,
I was reading it and found it very interesting. So how is it going? Have you found good foods?

I love to eat! And I am relatively thin. I mean relatively in the sense that I am at a correct weight for my body size and type. People look at me and say I am tiny, however, I see where my extra weight is - I think I just show it well so I appear thinner than I actually am.

Any way - up until having children - I could eat tons and not gain at all skinney as could be. Now I do have to watch. On the positive side - my appetitie has changed with my metabolism. I get full quicker - also I love food, but not too much "junk food." I love gourmet yummy healthy food in general so I believe that also helps me.

I also cannot understand people who do not enjoy eating - to me it is a great pleasure.

@Linkat,
Yep, my metabolism changed post-baby too. I didn't have to work at all to stay thin when I was a teenager, then started to have to work out to stay thin in my 20's but the weight came right off when I did. Now (post-baby) I need to work out much more strenuously for the same results.

@sozobe,
quite possibly true (metabolism) on the other hand (purely anecdotal) I personally have often observed couples (whatever) who claim "we eat the same but I gain and he/she doesn't" but when the rubber hits the road, one of the pair (perhaps unknowningly) actually does consume more calories. This seems much more commonplace to me than other explanations.
I have zero facts and am assuming this is merely conversation.

@dyslexia,
I do know what you mean, but that really isn't the case. I'm not much of a snacker -- my husband is. And the rest of the calorie intake is as described above.

He's a skeptical scientific type and has really changed his tune based on his experience with me.

I can manage my weight, and do, it just takes much more effort.
