About 12 hours here (Oz EST) time before the final gong for 2009. (Hot as Hades, too, I might say!)

Another new years eve. Here we go again!

Is new years eve a big deal to you? Do you "celebrate", or take things quietly?

What are you doing this time around ? Do tell.

This thread is really an excuse to wish all A2Kers the very best for 2010!

(For those of us who have had a crappy 2009, well thank goodness that's over! Very Happy )

@msolga,
New years eve has never been a huge "celebratory" deal to me. And tonight will be a quiet one again.

A barbecue with a friend. (Being eaten alive by mosquitoes, no doubt!) And a few glasses of wine. And maybe a DVD of some recently missed movie. Sounds OK to me. : )

@msolga,
I will call gram at midnite.

then we will have a small meal new year's day and play some more scrabble.

being out and about has become a bit too dodgy on amateur night.

lotsa sobriety checkpoints, and they will be doing booming business.

@Rockhead,
A scrabble evening, Rocky! Very Happy
What a good idea! (I really enjoy scrabble. You've just put an Idea in my head for another evening.)

So who usually wins? You or your grandmother? Wink

Best to you for 2010, Rocky!

@msolga,
gram doesn't strategize much, so I usually win.

(she gets mad if she thinks I'm sandbaggin'...)

a good year to you guys down there as well.

@Rockhead,
Ha. Perhaps you could kinda subtly let her win on new years eve, though? Wink

Thank you for the Oz new years eve wishes!

Now I'm sending the same to all Canadians! Very Happy

@msolga,
you'd have to meet her.

and I'd have to be REAL subtle. she's known me a long time...

We are not sure whether to do black-eyed peas again this year or not.

It was a crappy year.

Now we gotta decide, was it crappy cuz of the peas. or was the peas the only thing saved us from complete disaster...

(I will get back to you all on this)

@msolga,
It will be quiet here as well. The last memorable New Year's Eve was memorable for its unbelievable strangeness - and I slept through most of that.

I'm looking forward to New Year's Day and a walk on the beach with the dogs. It's a bit of a neighbourhood tradition down there. ok, down there is a five minute drive, but it is such a marvellous little microcosm of a neighbourhood.

Dinner at Chez George with our neighbors from across the street.
Best thing about that is, nobody drives.

I remember once, many moons ago, when I was coming home from a New Year's
party and was driving along Revere Beach Parkway. It was very late (or very
early) and there was little traffic. I saw headlights coming my way and realized
they were on the same side of the divider I was. I pulled over as far onto the
shoulder as I could get and the other car went roaring on by. Damn near
soiled the upholstery.

@ehBeth,
Yes, I think I understand about the unbelievable strangeness, ehBeth.
This has been a helluva year for you. So many changes. Losses, challenges & adjustments.

The communal doggy walk sounds a marvelous tradition. Really like that idea.

Love & all the very best to you for 2010, ehBeth. To your two beautiful critters & of course, to the Doggie Person, too! Very Happy

Oh please do! Smile

I'm sorry it was a crappy year for you, Rocky.

Mine was a mixture of crap, good stuff & a considerable number of predictable & unforeseen challenges! Ah life gets colourful sometimes! Very Happy

What an excellent idea, George. No one driving. Hey, sounds like rather a flash celebratory dinner you've got lined up! Smile

Agh, agh & agh!

Stupid stupid drinkers! Why on earth don't they take a taxi instead of driving?

Wishing you & yours a happy & peaceful 2010, George!

Agh. I have to go out there soon to collect some DVDs & wine for tonight. I really would rather not.

So far (a bit after 1 pm) the temperature is 34.2 C and rising fast.

Agh.

@msolga,
Well dollink girl, I hope 2010 works out as pleasantly as the last few days of 2009 are turning out.

A couple of niceish things have happened at work in the past few days, a childhood friend found me at facebook tonight (haven't seen her in about 35 years), and the fella had the dishes done AND my laundry started when I got home tonight.

Let's all have that kind of year - the kitchen and laundry elves are good to us, work appreciates us, and friends are everywhere!

oh - and have more picnics with the ones you love!

(cat people may have to be excused from this as I don't think cats do les piqueniques)

@msolga,
oooh, that's some kind of weather you're having

we're having snow flurries, which I'm quite pleased with

I like some snow on the ground for the New Year's Day walk. Makes it properly festive.

And the Doggie Person can make fun of the women in high heels prancing along the boardwalk wearing outfits that match their designer puppies (once we're home of course. he'll greet them in a most charming manner when we're on the boardwalk).

Up until I retired I alwas volunteered to work xmas eve and new year's eve (child protection is manned 24/7) so that workers with families/others could have the time off. In my life-time I have never attended any xmas eve, new year's eve festivities. Nor have I ever had a desire to do so.
Here in Albuquerque we will probably hear the usual fireworks and gun-fire at the stroke of midnight. Sally dog will probably hide under the bed blankets until it quiets down.
I take this opportunity to wish all the kind and decent people of a2k a prosperous and happy coming year.
