When it became plain that Sam would eventually lose his fight, I did not write for him, either. But, this lyric I wrote about myself was inspired by hs predicament.

My Self Destructive Life

Chorus l
Don't wear black for me
From love or sympathy
My self-destructive life's
Been a troubadour's delight

Verse l
Hoist up a round or three
Drink to clown called destiny
Don't say a prayer
Never have been a Main Street player

Chorus ll
Don't bring flowers and wreaths
Choke over memories
My self-destructive life's
Been a troubadour's delight

Bridge
Once you were a love to me
Found how warm a home could be
Our feet went on fire
Too indiscreet to be a liar

Verse ll
Set up a round again
Drink it with a smile my friend
Who knows the whole truth
Never believe it without the proof

Chorus lll
Don't carve a monument
Pay the poor children's rent
My self-destructive life's
Been a vagabond's delight

Then, when he had weeks left, this lyric came to me:

The End of the Circle

When you reach the end of the circle
You`ll be the same as you began
It`s there the baby in the cradle
Becomes one with the dying man

Every life move is quicksilver
A stream that has no bed
You meet the riddle with no answer
A hunger that must be fed

But
Before you reach even the middle
Gather roses if you can
Join friends in a chain of circles
Celebrate the brotherhood of man

Every life move is quicksilver
A stream that has no bed
You meet the riddle with no answer
A hunger that must be fed

And: No matter what you do
When you reach the end of the circle
You`ll be the same as you began
It`s where the baby in the cradle
Becomes one with the dying man

@edgarblythe,
I extend my condolences to you, edgar.
Thank you for posting, to an audience of folks you probably have never met in person but still consider friends, such an intimate story of you and Sam and Roger's lives.

I sometimes wonder about this character, "Chuck." Chuck was a nickname Sam had for me.

@edgarblythe,
I wish I knew him. He and you seem like two guys that Id love to have hung out with, I mean that sincerely. Once the tears are gone,I hope that all your memories of him will be those that end with smiles.

@edgarblythe,
edgar :

i'm sorry to read that you lost your brother !

but i am glad to see that you have something great to remember your brother by - in the end that is what is important .
your brother sure has left a legacy - it is one that many , many people will be able to enjoy for years to come !

i'll be going over the "funnies" again - i think i'll share them with some old friends .
if we can share a laugh and a smile at our age , the world can't be completely lost - there is still some hope .
take care .
hbg

to quote chuck :

"it's a collector's item !
it's preserved for the pleasure of future generations ! "

indeed , it is !

Thanks, hamburger. Sam had his sense of humor all the way through the ordeal. I could see it in the affectionate quips he made for his wife.
