@danon5,
Dan, not far from the stonehedge site (Salsbury Plane) , there was a village built of stone and timber. Does not answer the question of who gleeped the path stones though, but perhaps an insite of why the towering stones were built.

NG's article and photos here:

Beth, bet your a tired lady today. How was the event? Smile

@Stradee,
yes, I remember reading about this years ago. There was a "History" program on TV that covered the site also. So many things in our history that we don't know about and so many things in our "history" that we don't know about. I'm not trying to be evasive - history as we read and are supposed to learn about it in "school" is preprogrammed by a very few (under 10) people in most states. Here in Texas the few people who determine what goes into the "history" books are driven by self effaceable people - - - (not even elected by the people, but, appointed by higher standing (in the public's eye) people who support their ideology. As I have noted in "historical" posts - we here in NE TX are at the bottom of the so called "Bible Belt". I call it the "Buckle of the Bible Belt" because - in my opinion, we, errrrr, not me, but, some people around here who drink the water are the "[Butt] of the Bible Belt".....Jeeeeze!! Now, isn't THAT a Hippocrates - supposition???

Oh, well - - - I believe the statement of Napoleon Bonaparte - self imposed Emperor of France - who said, (on the record) 'History, as we know it is a series of lies - that have finally been agreed upon.'

I agree with him after trying to follow "history" - written by learned men and women - and reading so many different accounts of the same action.

Oh well. I tend to agree with the Bonaparte.

Till later.

@danon5,
Isn't that the truth!

Although historical sites are interesting, it is difficult not using supposition when explaining how the ancients lived. The same for writers of History.

If anything at all though, History accounts will challenge people to explore and learn more than what was initially written - even learning about the author reveals volumes of their era or experience.

My favorite history quote: God cannot alter the past, but historians can.
Samuel Butler (1612-1680) British poet and satirist.

@Stradee,
Cliiiiiiiiiiiicked

It was a great, exhausting, day and evening. I went to the theatre to help set up for the event around 2. A bunch of volunteers didn't show up, so I was suddenly put on curtain-puller duty - had to run backstage as soon as I'd finished handing out pre-ordered tickets. Stood shoeless on a cold cold floor for three hours trying to figure out what the next set of stage directions meant for me Shocked Laughing Shocked Helped the front desk at intermission and after the show. My toesies are tired. Since I was "technically" a wardrobe person, I was also on duty to help the dancers (and one of the musicians) change on my side of the stage. Had I seen the tech run-through? nooooooo. Did I know which costumes came next and whose they were? noooooooooo. My brain is tired.

It was incredible to see the hip belts and the masks (especially the masks) on the dancers. They looked good! I hope I can find some still shots to share once they've made the photos public.

What a weekend!

(the concert Friday night was pretty dang good - and I didn't have to work at it!)

@ehBeth,
Beth, omg - not a wonder feetsies hurt!

Sounds like you had a marvelous time though - and the masks turned out beautifully. Graduating quickly from wardrobe person to stage manager and barefoot to boot! I'm not surprised the dance was successful! Smile

OH, Here is a funny ===

There is not one dirty word in it, and it is funny!--

The Smiths were unable to conceive children and decided to use a surrogate father to start their family. On the day the proxy father was to arrive, Mr. Smith kissed his wife goodbye and said, 'Well, I'm off now. The man should be here soon.'
Half an hour later, just by chance, a door-to-door baby photographer happened to ring the doorbell, hoping to make a sale. 'Good morning, Ma'am', he said, 'I've come to...'
'Oh, no need to explain,' Mrs. Smith cut in, embarrassed, 'I've been expecting you.'
'Have you really?' said the photographer. 'Well, that's good. Did you know babies are my specialty?'
'Well that's what my husband and I had hoped. Please come in and have a seat
After a moment she
asked, blushing, 'Well, where do we start?'
'Leave everything to me. I usually try two in the bathtub, one on the couch, and perhaps a couple on the bed. And sometimes the living room floor is fun. You can really spread out there.'
'Bathtub, living room floor? No wonder it didn't work out for Harry and me!'
'Well, Ma'am, none of us can guarantee a good one every time. But if we try several different positions and I shoot from six or seven angles, I'm sure you'll be pleased with the results.'
'My, that's a lot!', gasped Mrs. Smith.
'Ma'am, in my line of work a man has to take his time. I'd love to be In and out in five minutes, but I'm sure you'd be disappointed with that.'
'Don't I know it,' said Mrs. Smith quietly.
The photographer opened his briefcase and pulled out a portfolio of his baby pictures. 'This was done on the top of a bus,' he said.
'Oh, my God!' Mrs. Smith exclaimed, grasping at her throat.
'And these twins turned out exceptionally well - when you consider their mother was so difficult to work with.'
'She was difficult?' asked Mrs. Smith. 'Yes, I'm afraid so. I finally had to take her to the park to get the job done right. People were crowding around four and five deep to get a good look'
'Four and five deep?' said Mrs. Smith, her eyes wide with amazement. 'Yes', the photographer replied. 'And for more than three hours, too. The mother was constantly squealing and yelling - I could hardly concentrate, and when darkness approached I had to rush my shots. Finally, when the squirrels began nibbling on my equipment, I just had to pack it all in.'
Mrs. Smith leaned forward. 'Do you mean they actually chewed on your, uh...equipment?'
'It's true, Ma'am, yes.. Well, if you're ready, I'll set-up my tripod and we can get to work right away.'
'Tripod?'
'Oh yes, Ma'am. I need to use a tripod to rest my
Canon on. It's much too big to be held in the hand very long.'
Mrs. Smith fainted

@sumac,
Would anyone care to comment on the following conflict, from today's NYT?

October 6, 2009
Editorial
Animal Cruelty and Free Speech

The First Amendment protects even disturbing speech, a point the Supreme Court should keep in mind on Tuesday when it hears arguments in the case of a man convicted of selling videos of dogfighting and other animal cruelty. A federal appeals court reversed his conviction, ruling that the federal law under which he was prosecuted is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court should uphold that well-reasoned decision.

Robert Stevens, who ran a business called “Dogs of Velvet and Steel,” sold videos of pit bulls engaging in dogfights and attacking other animals. He did not participate in the attacks personally, but he was charged under a federal law that makes it illegal to sell depictions of acts of animal cruelty that are themselves illegal in the state where the depiction is sold.

The United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, based in Philadelphia, reversed Mr. Stevens’s conviction. The Supreme Court has created narrow exceptions to the First Amendment for a few kinds of speech, including obscenity and, more recently, child pornography. The appeals court rightly declined to create another category for depictions of animal cruelty.

Some of the material in this case is truly stomach-churning. There are people who enjoy watching animals being tortured and killed. There is also, the federal government’s brief says, a market for “crush videos,” in which women trample small animals with their bare feet or while wearing high-heel shoes, images that some viewers are said to find sexually arousing. Videos are also sold showing dogfights and hog-dogfights, in which dogs attack, and sometimes kill, pigs.

This is not the only deeply offensive speech protected by the Constitution. Nazis are allowed to march, and racists are allowed to spew racism. If legislatures have the power to disapprove certain categories of unpopular speech, a lot of expression could become illegal. The government seems to think it is enough that the harm caused by the animal-cruelty depictions outweighs their social value, but the First Amendment does not say that Congress can restrict speech if it fails a balancing test.

It is also extraordinarily difficult to carve out free-speech exceptions. Animal cruelty is often depicted in videos and on Web sites that seek to call attention to the problem of animal abuse. The law makes an exception for certain depictions that have serious political, journalistic or other value, but there is no clear way to sort through all of the covered expression to determine who should be held criminally liable and who should not.

All 50 states have laws against animal abuse. The best way to fight animal cruelty is to enforce these laws more vigorously and to increase the penalties. Anyone with an ounce of decency should be tempted to ban animal-abuse videos, but anyone with an appreciation for the First Amendment understands why we cannot.

@sumac,
Damned sickening.

The appeals court could have created a category for depictions of animal cruelty but "rightly" declined???

Investigators will be busy tracking down 'film makers' for prosecution. The case hasn't see the last of advocates and lawmakers either.

@High Seas,
Thanks HighSeas - you are a good person...........!

sue, you are fighting a very rerefied fight in words to we people. I'm sure you are continuing the same fight of words to other people and sites/postings..... That's a good thing in my point of view.

Keep the faith. You remind me of the 1960's era young people - as we all were in those days. Especially me..... Now, 50 yrs later, I've revised my thinking - I used to think that awakening each morning was a goal to achieve - I now think that awakening is OK, but, it still takes about 20 to 30 minutes to get the kinks out of EVERYTHING in order to get on with the day.

Good day, all............

@High Seas,
Hoft, the care2 page displays all the options (wolves, big cats, etc.) in a box on the left side of the page. After you click the team link, sign in, then click for the rainforest:
http://rainforest.care2.com/i?p=583091674
and when the 'thankyou' page appears, look on the left side of that page and you'll see an elongated display box with all the other clicking options.

I believe you are on the aktbird team. Recall you registereing from one of the rainforest threads at the old abuzz. The link above is the team link. Just click on that link each day and your vote will count for the team. We're still the number one team in the world.

Am so glad you're clicking each day! Smile
